Reservations System
A computer based reservations system has now been introduced
in the main Library Meric to replace the manual booking of workstations.

Audiovisual Room
The Library's new audiovisual room situated in the Elsa Goveia
Reading Room is now officially opened. The room houses mainly
West Indian resources on phono discs, tapes, video cassettes,
CDs (audio and video) and slides. The highlight of the formal
opening was the presentation to Vice Chancellor, Professor the
Hon. Rex Nettleford, Spanish educational material named the Federico
Garcia Lorca Collection by His Excellency Rafael Jover, Ambassador
of Spain.
Persons wishing to use the audiovisual collection should contact
the West Indies and Special Collection issue desk.

OPAC Training
Training sessions on using the Library's Online Catalogue are
being held as follows:

Come and learn about using our on-line catalogue to locate items
on your reading lists, to view past examination papers and to
view other digitised material.

Electronic Reserves
A pilot project for the digitisation of RBC Main Library photocopies
is now in progress and will be for the rest of the semester. Access
to the digitised photocopies is available from Catalogue via the
Library's Web site, only. Electronic reserves can be located in
the OPAC by title, author searches. These may be read or printed
from ALL computers in MERIC. Three computers in main Library Meric
are specifically reserved for immediate use and printing.

Trial databases
The Library has secured a month's free access to OxResearch
a product of Oxford Analytica an international consulting firm
founded in 1975. The database provides researchers with timely
analysis of worldwide political, economic and social development
drawn from the scholarship of Oxford and other major universities
and research institutions around the World.
The library has two weeks free access to three databases of the
Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). EIU is a world leader in country
intelligence and gives complete access to country reports and
other detailed analyses. Contact staff in Meric for password.

Research for Development Vol 11 1998-2002
The Principal has asked the Library to compile and publish Research
for Development, 1998-2002 to coincide with Research Day activities
on January 30 and 31, 2003.
To ensure that all your publications for the period are included
in this volume we would ask that you kindly:
1. Send a list of your publications in printed format no later
than July 30, 2002 to

e-mail to: offlibry@uwimona.edu.jm under the subject Research
for Development.
2. Send us a copy of your article or publication if a copy has
not been deposited in the Library. (We will return these if requested
to do so at the time copies are delivered).
A complimentary copy of the previous volume, Research for Development
Vol. 1 (1993-1998) will be sent to each Head of Department, for
consultation within the Department. Personal copies may also be
obtained from the Library for $350.00.

Erna Brodber exhibition
A small exhibition entitled "From Kumblas to Blackspace"
highlighting the works and achievements of Erna Brodber noted
sociologist, international lecturer and creative writer is currently
mounted in the Main Library Catalogue Hall.

Scientific American Archive Online,
(30-day trial, Available only from Campus)
The archive currently contains the entire editorial contents
of Scientific American Magazine, from January 1993 through to
the present.The Magazine covers spectacular developments that
take place in every field of science. The issues are presented
in PDF format, which maintains the integrity of the printed page
with all the graphics.

Mrs. Jacqueline Roberts
It is with sadness that the Library announces the passing of
the Science Librarian, Mrs. Jacqueline Roberts who died Friday
March 15 2002. A Thanksgiving service will be held on Friday,
March 22 at 10.30 am at the University Chapel.
Austin Clarke
Internationally acclaimed Barbadian-Canadian writer, Austin Clarke,
who visited the UWI March 12-15, 20002, presented the Library
with part of the manuscript, of his forthcoming novel, The Polished
Hoe.

Examination papers
Undergraduate examination papers in the social sciences and the
humanities received in the Library from semester 2,1999 are now
available in electronic format via the Library's Web Site. This
is an ongoing project and papers from the Faculty of Pure and
Applied Sciences and postgraduate papers will be added shortly.
Multiple choice papers and those from the Medical Sciences Faculty
are not included
You can access the papers by a title search in the Catalogue
via the Library's Web site by course code or title e.g.FD10A or
English for academic purpose.

BioOne
The Library has a trial subscription to BioOne. BioOne is a bioscience
research journals database. It provides access to a thoroughly
linked information resource of interrelated journals focused on
the biological, ecological and environmental sciences. Abstracts,
full text in HTML and PDFformat of articles are available to subscribers.
BioOne is available through ECO on the First Search Database
To access BioOne click here and follow the instructions below
Click on browse journal titles under Basic Search (Top middle
screen)
Click on Publisher Collections button
Select BioOne from drop-down menu
Click on Browse Journal titles button
N.B. You will see "Displaying records 1 to 43 of 43.This
is the list with the BioOne journals beginning with Ambio and
ending with Wilson Bulletin.

Kenneth
Ingram
Kenneth Ingram, former University Librarian and awardee of the
Book Development Prize- Best Academic Book 1999/2001, presented
a lecture entitled "Historical Sources: Discovering, Acquiring
and Using them in the West Indian Setting" in the UWI library
during January 2002. The event was the result of collaboration
between the UWI Department of Library and Information Studies
and The Library.

Book Presentation
The Mona Library recently received over forty titles covering
a range of subjects including linguistics, literature, religion
and culture from His Excellency, Isao Otsuka, Japanese Ambassador.

Increase in Fines for Overdue Material
The Library will be introducing a new fine structure for overdue
materials with effect from February 11, 2002 for the Main, Medical
and Science Libraries
New rates

| RBC three hour loans |
$20.00 per day |
In addition the maximum unpaid fines allowed to remain on a readers
account will now be $100.00 instead of $40.00

Kamau Brathwaite Exhibition
An exhibition on the life and work of Professor Brathwaite was
mounted by the Library in its Multi-Functional Room to coincide
with the Second Conference on Caribbean Culture, January 9-12,
2002. The exhibition which was formally opened on January 9 by
Sir Roy Augier, will run until January 31 and can be viewed in
the Catalogue Hall, Main Library Monday to Friday, 8:30 am. -
10:00 p.m. and Saturday, 8:30 -4:00 p.m.
