REFERENCE ASSISTANCE
Librarians at the Reference Inquiries Desk are available to give assistance with all types of questions.MERIC
The Mona Electronic Reference and Information Centre (MERIC) is the Library’s computer-based research facility, located in the Main Library and the Science and Medical Branch Libraries.The following services are available in MERIC:

COMMERCIAL DATABASES
The Library currently subscribes to the following commercial databases:• Cambridge Scientific Abstracts

Other full text databases are available on a trial basis.IN-HOUSE DATABASES
A number of in-house databases have been created to give greater access to parts of the Library’s collection. Examples of these databases are:West Indiana – West Indian articles, book chapters, conference papers, offprints and pamphlets;
CAREN – the Caribbean Environment;

LIBRARY ORIENTATION & INFORMATION LITERACY INSTRUCTION
The Library offers general orientation tours to all new library users. Tours can be arranged in advance for special groups.Information Literacy instruction is offered to students as part of UC120: Language, Exposition and Argument, and FD10A: English for Academic Purposes. Open training sessions on the OPAC, Internet, search strategies and electronic databases are advertised on the Library’s Website and on Campus notice boards. Customized group sessions can be arranged with advance notice.
RESERVE BOOK COLLECTION (RBC)
All the libraries have a RBC collection – highly recommended items on course reading lists. The loan period – overnight, or for 3 hours within the Library only - is shorter than for open shelf books. The short loan period allows these highly recommended texts to circulate among a large number of students.INTER-LIBRARY LOAN
Material that is not in the Library’s collection can be requested from other libraries on inter-library loan at a cost to the user. Cost and time taken for delivery of material vary. Usually, journal articles are supplied as photocopies, which the user may keep.BIBLIOGRAPHIES
Librarians compile bibliographies on topics of interest. Some of these are available online as databases.EXHIBITIONS
Displays and exhibitions on a wide range of themes are mounted in all libraries. Some are mounted by the Library; others by campus organizations.CURRENT AWARENESS
The Library offers a current awareness service. Further information is available from the Periodicals librarian in the Main Library.Important notices are posted regularly on the Library’s notice boards and Website.
THE CARIBBEAN PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE (CPIC) is a repository of publicly available information from the World Bank. It operates as a reference library and reading room open to the public.

Fieldwork for student librarians and library technicians are arranged and supervised on request
FACILITIES FOR USERS WITH IMPAIRED
VISIONA room for visually impaired users and volunteer readers is located in MERIC at the Main Library. It is equipped with 2 computers and special software for the visually impaired. Library staff will provide help and student assistance is also available some evenings and on Saturdays. Extended loan periods are allowed for items in the Reserve Book Collection (RBC).
RESERVATIONS
Except for books in the Reserve Book Collection, any book or periodical that is out on loan or otherwise temporarily unavailable may be reserved by completing a green Reservation Form at the Circulation Desk.RENEWALS
An item from the open shelves may be renewed if it is not overdue and has not been reserved by someone else. Items to be renewed must be brought to the Library and can be renewed only once. RBC items and periodicals are not renewable.EXAMINATION PAPERS
Past examination papers of the University are available in hard copy at the Main, Science or Medical Libraries, or in electronic copy via the Library’s catalogue on the Web. Please inquire at the Circulation Desk in the respective library.POSTGRADUATE READING ROOM
This facility is located on the first floor of the Main Library, adjoining the World Bank Public Information Centre. Only Post-Graduate students are allowed entry.Six computers with Internet access, Microsoft Office and SPSS Software packages are available. The room can facilitate group or individual study.
PHOTOCOPYING
Photocopying machines are available in all the libraries. Photocopy cards may be purchased at the Circulation Desks or from the Reprographic Services Unit (RESU) in the Main Library. A refundable deposit is included in the cost of the cards. Users do their own copying and are expected to comply with copyright regulations when doing so.REPROGRAPHIC SERVICES UNIT
The Reprographic Services Unit (RESU) in the Main Library offers the following services• sale of photocopy cards
• colour and black and white photocopying. Material may be left for copying and collected at a time indicated by staff
• laminating.
• setting up printing accounts – i.e. inputting passwords and crediting account.Opening hours: Mondays-Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. When RESU is closed, photocopy cards are sold at the Circulation Desk; printing accounts are set up at the Reference Inquiries desk.
The Academic Staff Room (Main Library) is available for use by Academic and Senior Administrative Staff. It is located on the Periodicals floor and is equipped with computers providing access to the Internet, the Library’s on-line catalogue and homepage, and word-processing.
STUDY CARRELS
All three libraries provide enclosed study carrels, some of which are equipped with workstations, for academic and research staff and postgraduates. Inquiries should be made at the Circulation Desks in the respective libraries.
MICROFORM
The Library provides equipment for reading/printing microfiche/microfilm. These are located in the West Indies & Special Collections (WI&SC). Please inquire at the Main Library’s Reference Desk or in WI&SC.The Library operates an overnight reading room. It is located in the ground floor reading room of the Main Library. It is opened after the Library closes and remains open until the following morning
