Medical Parasitology

 

Research into parasitic infections at Mona extends from studies of medical and veterinary parasites to investigations of environmental and wildlife parasitology.

Medical parasitological investigations have provided information on risk factors for the transmission of important human parasites such as the intestinal roundworm Strongyloides stercoralis (see left) and the stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori.

Dog roundworms, Toxocara canis, are also capable of infecting humans when eggs of the parasite (right) are accidentially ingested with soil. Our research indicates a complex combination of unsanitary practices and ownership of infected puppies place persons at greatest risk of infection
