Dr. Aiken has worked on fish and fisheries matters since 1971 when he completed his Masters Degree research. He has conducted fisheries research on spiny lobsters and island as well offshore resources and taught fisheries and fish biology to undergraduates, managed several Research Projects and worked on reef fisheries management. His interests have included queen conch assessment & management, freshwater mullet biology, wetland fisheries and aquaculture. He was awarded the PhD for research into the use of fish otoliths (earstones) in ageing the lane snapper (Lutjanus synagris (Linnaeus, 1758)) in Jamaican waters. Dr. Aiken currently runs several fisheries research projects, mainly funded by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) and the European Commission-funded University of Portsmouth(UK)-coordinated ECOST project.

Research Projects
  • Studying new methodologies for integrated socio-economic fisheries management. ECOST Multi-disciplinary international collaborative project with 15 universities and agencies, coordinated by the Univ. of Portsmouth, UK.
  • Ecological assessment of the Morant Wetlands, St. Thomas. Funded by EFJ. (with Drs. Dale & Mona Webber & Dr. Judith Mendes).
  • Mangroves & seagrass beds of Kingston Harbour: roles as sustainable nurseries for fishable organisms, EFJ–funded.
  • Dolphin interaction with fish traps. Funded by EFJ.
  • Super-intensive tilapia culture.
  • Use of hard parts (otoliths or earstones) to age commercial marine fishes.
  • Fishable resources assessment/management (Queen conch), with Fisheries Division, Ministry of Agriculture. Funding from EFJ.
