Preliminary Courses
These are feeder courses for the introductory level, providing the requisite knowledge base for higher level biology, botany and zoology courses. They could also be considered a terminal course in biology which provides the basis for use in educational instruction (up to Grade 11).
BL05A/BIOL0011 - PRELIMINARY BIOLOGY I
Aim
- To equip students with a basic knowledge of biological principles and processes.
Objectives
- describe the chemical and biological foundation for life,
- describe the role of cell division mechanisms in the processes of sexual and asexual reproduction,
- distinguish between the various forms of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms,
- explain the basic principles involved in evolution.
Upon successful completion of the course the students should

BL05B/BIOL0012 - PRELIMINARY BIOLOGY II
Aim
- To equip students with a basic knowledge of the systems in plants and animals.
Objectives
- explain the relationships between organisms and the environment and between each other,
- describe the role of energy flow and the cycling of nutrients in the sustenance of ecosystems,
- describe the general form and function of plant life,
- describe the general form and function of animal life.
