Interpretation (establishing the meaning[s] of the text) is an integral part of literary appreciation. This course examines the issues which arise from the idea and practice of interpreting literary texts. The aim is not to teach us how to interpret, but to make us understand what it is we do when we interpret, and what considerations ought to be taken into account in trying to deal with the issues. If, in the process, our critical and interpretative skills are enhanced, so much the better. Prerequisite: Six (6) credits from any of the following level 1 courses: HUMN 1101 (AR11A) or
Prescribed Texts: Fitzgerald, F. Scott. The Great Gatsby (Penguin pb)
Highly Recommended: Selden, Raman. The Theory of Criticism (Longman pb)
