| E32C: THE ROMANCE Lecturer in charge: TBA [Room Beginning with Samuel Richardson's prefiguring narrative, Pamela , the course analyses the evolution of the genre of the Romance. Focusing on tropes of discovery and conquest, we will consider ways in which the project of “Romance” encodes both patriarchal and colonialist notions of the body of the woman (and phallocentricism among men). The course will also explore the degree to which Caribbean authors either replicate or transform the conventions of the genre to accommodate local cultures/myth. Prerequisite: HUMN 2201 (AR22A) or LITS 2103 (E21C) or LITS 2107 (E21G) or LITS 2108 (E21H) or LITS 2113 (E21M) Instruction: 2 lectures, 1 tutorial per week Assessment: One 3,000-word research paper 40% Final 2 hour examination 60% Prescribed Texts: Bronte, Emily.
