This will be a study of selected comedies and late plays (or ‘romances'), with particular attention to Shakespearean dramaturgy, the evolution and innovations of Shakespearean comedy, and the relations of text and performance from the 1590's to the present. Screen adaptations of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Much Ado will also be considered.
Pre-requisites: For Majors : At least one level II drama or poetry course
Instruction: 2 lectures and 1 tutorial per week Final 2-hour exam (2 answers) 60%
