"Human Rights, Health and the Medical Profession in the Twenty-First Century: Human Rights as a Bedrock for Patient Care"

Abstract
The medical profession already has a strong ethical framework that guides its operation. So the lecture asks the question, why are human rights important as a way of understanding patient care? This is an even more pointed question given the contested nature of human rights in the Caribbean.
 
The lecture will discuss the wide range of human rights principles that apply not only to patients but health care providers. It will also explore the challenge faced by medical personnel of ‘dual loyalties’ to the patient and the state. The lecture will also focus on torture, violence, discrimination and social exclusion, areas in which human rights are already reshaping standards for patient care, including in the Caribbean.  Among the examples that will be considered is the situation of persons deprived of liberty, treatment of intersex children and obstetric care in institutional settings.
