7th Caribbean Reasonings Conference Opens on September 30

The 7th Caribbean Reasonings Conference begins with an official Opening Ceremony on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the Mona Visitor’s Lodge under the theme, "Freedom and Power in the Caribbean: The Work of Gordon K. Lewis". The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Paget Henry, Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies, Brown University, Rhode Island. The presentation is entitled, “Gordon Lewis, UWI and Our Changing Philosophy of Education.”

The 2010 Caribbean Reasonings Conference will explore the work of the late Gordon K. Lewis, Professor of Political Science at the University of Puerto Rico. Lewis' intellectual work broke the conventional linguistic and political boundaries of the Caribbean region. His work was interdisciplinary, spanning the disciplines of political science and intellectual history and he was a major force in the formation of the Field of Caribbean Studies. The Conference will explore a range of interdisciplinary issues over the two days in keeping with the work of Gordon K. Lewis. Topics being discussed include: Revisiting Revolution and Violence in the Caribbean, The Future of Caribbean Politics, Religion and Culture, The Past, Present and Future of Caribbean Thought and Selected Issues in Caribbean Thought and Politics.

The Opening Plenary Presentation on October 1 will be delivered by Professor Anthony Maingot, Professor Emeritus, Florida International University, USA.  The Conference also features presentations from several local and international scholars.

An exhibition and book launch takes place as part of the Conference on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library, UWI, Mona.  Two books will be launched on this occasion, Thought of The New World, The Quest for Decolonisation, which is the fourth in the Caribbean Reasonings series and is edited by Brian Meeks and Norman Girvan and the second book, Gordon K. Lewis On Race, Class and Ideology in the Caribbean is a collection of writings by the late political sociologist, Gordon K. Lewis. The guest speaker will be Professor Franklin Knight.

The Conference culminates on Saturday, October 2 with a Closing Ceremony with Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill as the guest speaker.
