UWI Professor to Participate in UNESCO Meeting on Media and Information Literacy

Head of the Department of Library and Information Studies at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Professor Claudette Fay Durrant will represent the institution at the expert group meeting “Development of Media and Information Literacy Indicators” which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from 4 to 6 November 2010.

Professor Durrant is attending the meeting at the invitation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). As Vice Chair of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Council of the Information for All Programme (IFAP), and Chair of the Working Group on Information Literacy Indicators, she participated in the initial activities of IFAP for developing a basic conceptual framework for measuring information literacy and the refinement of information literacy indicators.

The meeting will bring together an international group from a wide range of fields such as librarianship, information literacy, media literacy, teacher education, lifelong learning, curriculum development, psychometrics and statistics. Their knowledge and experience is expected to make a significant contribution in developing Media and Information Literacy (MIL) indicators. The meeting will also review and validate the conceptual foundations of the “Development of media and information literacy indicators (MIL)” project. This includes the examination and validation of a generic set of MIL Indicators, and methodology for refining measurement of short, medium and long-term MIL indicators.
