Advisory In Relation To Tropical Storm Tomas

The University of the West Indies, Mona is monitoring the situation in light of forecasts that Jamaica may be affected by Tropical Storm Tomas and is taking the necessary steps to safeguard life and property.

The path that Tomas will take remains quite uncertain, and The University will remain in close contact with the Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management (ODPEM), and be guided accordingly.  Hurricane Preparedness plans have been initiated.

The UWI, Mona assures international partner universities and Governments that all non-Jamaican students will be contacted to ensure that they are aware of the necessary safety precautions. Students who reside on Campus will be provided with adequate shelter and protection should the system change course.  Shelter Managers have been identified for all sites, security is in place and food and water will be available should the need arise.

Until further advised, classes remain in session and plans for the Graduation Ceremonies on Friday evening and on Saturday morning and Saturday evening have continued.
A further Advisory will be issued on Wednesday afternoon, November 3, 2010.
