Tropical Storm Tomas- Severe Weather Bulletin 1

Tropical Storm, Tomas could strengthen into a Hurricane. The system over the next forty-eight hours (48) is expected to turn towards the north and move in the direction of the island of Hispaniola.

The Meteorological community is almost in consensus that, if Tomas remains on its projected path, Jamaica should not receive a direct hit. However, the island could experience rainfall ranging from torrential rainfall to that of tropical storm conditions. The weather could start to deteriorate as early as Wednesday afternoon/ evening and continue into Thursday and Friday.

The university community is encouraged to prepare and not panic. Below are some Hurricane Tips:
There could be high winds and occasional gusts:
-Commence erecting/closing of Hurricane Shutters
-Seal vulnerable windows and doors
Flooding is likely:
-Prepare/clear drains
-Position Sand Bags at vulnerable points
-Elevate items which are likely to be affected by flooding
Roof leaks are possible:
-Secure and hold plastic coverings for books, equipment etc.
Water supply could be affected:
-Store drinking and domestic water
Power supply could be suspended:
-Have alternate lighting/power supply at hand
