UWI, Mona Hosts First UNESCO Micro Science Project in the Caribbean

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host the first UNESCO Micro Science Project training workshop on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 9 am. The Global Micro-science Experiments Project is a hands-on science education project that gives primary and secondary school students as well as university students the opportunity to conduct practical work in physics, chemistry and biology, using kits with booklets from UNESCO’s teaching and learning materials describing possible scientific experiments. It is also designed to promote capacity building for science education and enhance development of scientific thinking and experimentation.

The Micro Science Project training workshop is the first of its kind in the Caribbean and is being implemented by UNESCO in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Jamaica and the International Organization for Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD).  UWI, Mona’s involvement is in keeping with the institution’s commitment to high quality teaching and research in science and outreach efforts in this area. The UNESCO Kingston Cluster Office Caribbean has selected Jamaica as the first country in the Caribbean to pilot the Microscience project and gradually expand the pilot project to other countries in the region

Several secondary schools teachers in Jamaica will participate in the training workshop Mr. Cezar Toro, Programme Specialist, Science, UNESCO Cluster Office for the Caribbean will speak on this occasion. UWI experts assisted by postgraduate students will lead the practical experiments in the workshop.

The Micro Science Project is designed to promote science education and its role in development, enhance public interest in science, and play a key role in building scientific capacity and promoting science-based development in the developing world. The emphasis will be in training science teachers through e-learning and up-to-date science education curriculum material, in cooperation with partners well-established in open and distance learning.  It will facilitate international cooperation and global partnerships for developing and strengthening national and regional capacities in the basic, physical sciences and mathematics.
