Expansion planned for Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit

Minister of Health, Hon Rudyard Spencer will deliver the main address at the official groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies Mona on Monday, November 22, 2010 at 11.00 a.m.

UWI Vice Chancellor Professor E. Nigel Harris will break ground at the ceremony which takes place on the compound of the University Hospital of the West Indies. 

 Expansion of the Unit is scheduled to commence by the end of 2010. It is expected to significantly improve the Unit’s physical and technological capacity to expand teaching, research and clinical services in reproductive health for undergraduate and post graduate medical and nursing students as well as clients and health care professionals locally, regionally and internationally. 

The expansion aims to upgrade the existing technology and physical facilities to increase clinical services in minimally invasive surgery and assisted reproductive technologies. It will involve the establishment of telemedicine facilities to enhance teaching, research and clinical services in gynaecological and related procedures across the Caribbean

The objective is also to establish a research laboratory to investigate reproductive health issues and to create a centre of excellence in teaching, research and clinical services in sexual and reproductive health.

The Unit will also be hosting an Open Day immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony to showcase its work under the theme “The Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit – Past, Present, Future”.
