UWI MONA ROBOTICS TEAM EXCELS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

A team of Level 2 electronics engineers, electronics and computer science students from the Faculty of Science & Technology at The UWI, Mona placed 3rd in the IEEE international Robotics competition held Saturday, April 2 in Virginia USA. They competed against 46 universities within southeast USA.

Team members were: Yekini Wallen-Bryan – team captain; Paulo Williams, Richard Harris, Aisha Robinson, Khalid Sharpe, Sean McBean, Jason Brown, Locksley Murray, Kriston Kong and Dane Miller. Mr. Lindon Falconer was the Lecturer/team advisor.

The theme of the IEEE SouthEastCon Hardware Competition was the Hampton Roads Shipping Barge. The course consisted of a scaled down shipping wharf comprising of a shipping barge, a zone for transport via rails, for transport via boat and a zone for transport via truck. Entrants had to design and build a completely autonomous robot that would collect "containers" of varying colors and QR codes and sort them based on the zone that they were collected from as well as color/QR code and transport them to the correct destination for transport within a time span of 5 minutes.

Points were awarded when blocks were sorted correctly and for the time it took for the tasks to be completed. The final top 4 points standing was as follows:

(1) Florida Institute of Technology (2) Murray State University (3) The University of The West Indies, Mona (4) Virginia Military Institute

The team also placed 6th in the software competition in which 23 universities competed.
