Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. April 5, 2017:
Forty-eight students from across the four campuses of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) were awarded Open Scholarships for the 2016/2017 academic year, which amount to a total of US$326,649. The awards were made based on high academic achievements in Caribbean Examinations Council (CSEC)/ The Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) or the results of their prior academic institutions such as community or state college for those students who have completed an Associate Degree or students who have completed their first year at The UWI.  This year’s scholarship winners represent the islands of Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago; the full listing of students is available at http://uwi.edu/undergraduatestudies/obus-scholarships.aspx.

The UWI Open Scholarship is the most prestigious of the regional scholarships administered by the University’s Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies (OBUS). It is funded by the 17 Caribbean governments which contribute to The UWI on an annual basis.  Recipients receive full tuition fees and miscellaneous charges; hall fees for on-campus accommodation OR US$2000 towards off-campus accommodation; book allowance US$500 and a meal allowance of US$2000. Awardees have the choice to pursue any government-sponsored, undergraduate degree at any of The UWI’s four campuses.

The online application for The UWI Open Scholarships is advertised over a four-month period, and coincides with The UWI applications for entry to general undergraduate degree programmes. Applications are currently open to all CARICOM nationals for the 2017/2018 academic year, and will close on April 28, 2017.
