A.D.Scott Exhibition 10 years after his death

The UWI Museum will be remembering the life and work of AD Scott, engineer, builder, art patron and artist through an exhibition of pieces from the UWI’s AD Scott Collection, starting Monday,  June 16 – the 10th anniversary of his death.
 

UWI initiates fogging to prevent mosquito borne diseases

The Estate Management Department has announced that there will be a fogging exercise to reduce the mosquito population on campus in the wake of the outbreak of mosquito borne diseases in the Eastern Caribbean.

"There is an outbreak of Mosquito-borne chikungunya fever in the Eastern Caribbean, and Jamaica is currently experiencing an increase in mosquito Infestation Island wide. Chikungunya fever and dengue fever are viral infections that are transmitted from person to person mainly by, the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
 

The UWI Council Approves Tuition Fees for 2014/2015 Academic Year

The University Council of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) approved a small percentage increase in tuition fees for its Mona and Open campuses for the upcoming 2014 -15 academic year.
 
At The UWI Council’s Annual Business Meeting, chaired by Chancellor Sir George Alleyne in Nassau, Bahamas in April, members considered and approved the recommended fees, which had been endorsed by the Sub-Committee on Tuition Fees. The University Council of The UWI is the supreme governing body of the regional institution.
 

UWI participates in meeting to control dengue and Chikungunya virus

The Caribbean Public Health Agency, CARPHA, and the Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network, CKLN are convening a half-day virtual symposium focused on managing the spread of Dengue fever and the Chikungunya virus (both spread by the Aedes Egypti mosquito) on June 12, 2014, in different sites around the region.
 

UWI to confer 20 Honorary Degrees in 2014 Graduation Ceremonies

The 2014 graduation ceremonies at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will see the conferral of 20 honorary degrees: four at the Cave Hill Campus, six at the Mona Campus, two at the Open Campus, and eight at the St. Augustine Campus. The following awardees will receive honorary doctorates in recognition of their stellar contributions to Caribbean development:

Dr Parris Lyew-Ayee Returns to Jamaica from Eisenhower Fellowship

Dr Parris Lyew-Ayee - Senior Lecturer and Director of the Mona GeoInformatics Institute of the University of the West Indies - has returned to Jamaica following a seven-week program in the United States to investigate ways to improve data-driven decision-making in Jamaica.
 
Dr Lyew-Ayee was sponsored by the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowships program, chaired by General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret).
 

UWI Marketing Association launches internship programme for students

The University of the West Indies Marketing Association (UMA) has taken another bold step forward in the development of the nation’s youth by launching an internship programme for students.
 
“Today, I can say that birth has been given to the UMA Internship Programme, and my main objective has been achieved. Thank you to our partners, as students will now receive the nurturing and experience which will make it easy to transition directly into the workforce after graduating,” said Stephen Reid, president of the UMA.
 
The UWI Marketing Asso-ciation was relaunched last year with the aim to create hundreds of internships and job opportunities for students enrolled at the institution.
 

UWI Mona hosts Jamaican Cannabis Conference

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host a  three-day Inaugural Jamaica Cannabis Conference, from  May 22 – 24, 2014, at the Faculty of Law, Lecture Room 2 and the Undercroft, under the theme “Wake Up Jamaica, Our Opportunities are Slipping Away”. The conference is expected to attract several international speakers, including scientists and researchers.
 
The first day of the conference will address the Reform Agenda, under the theme ‘Decriminalization, the First Step’.
 

UWI, Mona signs MOU with Global Soccer Ministries International

 

  • Synthetic football turf to be installed at The UWI, Mona

As part of its on‐going strategic plan for sports development, The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Global Soccer Ministries (GSM) International through which GSM will install a synthetic turf field with lights on the Campus. The turf will provide an all‐year field for football training at Mona.
 
The MOU was signed by UWI, Mona Principal, Professor Archibald McDonald, and CEO and President of Global Soccer Ministries International, Mr. Paul Banta, at a ceremony held Wednesday, May 21, 2014 in the Principal’s Conference Room at Mona.
