Dr. Henry Ellis Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Henry Ellis, senior lecturer in Physical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Mona Campus to the rank of Professor of Chemistry, with effect from October 5, 2011.
Henry Anthony Ellis holds both the Bachelor of Science (BSc (Hons) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom and was also Science Research Council Scholar, UK. Professor Ellis lectured courses in Physical and Polymer Chemistry at the University of Ife in Nigeria then joined the staff of The UWI, Mona in 1982. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1987.
Dr. Beverley Bryan Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr Beverley Bryan, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies, School of Education, to the rank of Professor, with effect from October 5, 2011.
Beverley Bryan holds the Bachelor of Arts in English, the Master of Arts in Language and Literature in Education and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Language Education from the University of London, as well as a Teachers’ Certificate in Education from Keele University. She joined the Staff of The UWI, Mona in 1992 as Lecturer in Educational Studies and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2002.
UWI Professor Receives 2011 CARICOM Science Award

Dean of the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa, has been awarded the prestigious 2011 CARICOM Science Award, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of science nationally and throughout the region.
The award was presented to Professor Kahwa at a ceremony held recently at the Grafton Beach Resort in Tobago.
UWI Professor Receives Gleaner Honour Award

Dr. Simon Mitchell, Professor of Sedimentary Geology at The University of the West Indies, Mona has been named the 2011 recipient of the Gleaner Honour Award for Science and Technology in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of Jamaican geological research.
Presidents and Governors-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to Visit UWI, Mona

The Government of Jamaica will host the 14th annual Conference of Presidents and Governors-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) from November 21- 24, 2011 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Kingston.
It will be held under the theme: 'Building Together for the Future'.
Ten Heads of State from Antigua and Barbuda; Bahamas; Belize; the Commonwealth of Dominica; Grenada; St. Kitts and Nevis; St. Lucia; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; and Jamaica are expected to attend. The four-day event will allow for the sharing of experiences and developments in the various territories.
UWI, Mona Officially Opens Faculty of Law Building

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host the official opening of the Faculty of Law Building on Thursday, November 3, 2011. The Building boasts state of the art modern infrastructure including several lecture theatres and seminar rooms, conference rooms, a Law Library and meeting rooms.
The Mona Campus has since September 2009 begun the delivery of the undergraduate Law degree (LL.B.) programme under an arrangement whereby the Mona Campus admits a specific number of students who will take the entire three years of the degree at Mona. Of this number approximately thirty (30) of those students will pursue their first year at the Western Jamaica Campus of UWI, Mona and subsequently transfer to the Mona Campus for the final two years.
UWI Chancellor Delivers Lecture Entitled, “Health De-Gendered is Health Denied”

Sir George Alleyne, UWI Chancellor, will deliver a public lecture entitled,” Health De-Gendered is Health Denied” on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 4 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona.
The Lecture will explore the importance of gender as a determinant of health and its implications for policies. Gender considerations are important in the genesis and treatment of some of the critical diseases in Jamaica and the Caribbean. To remove gender from consideration as an important social category is inimical to the health of both women and men.
Eight Members of the UWI Community Receive National Honours

Eight members of the UWI, Mona community were presented with national honours by His Excellency, the Governor General of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen at the recently held National Honours and Awards Ceremony at King’s House. Receiving the Order of Jamaica (OJ), the fifth highest honour were Honorary Graduate, Dr. Raymond Chang who was recognized for his outstanding contribution as a business leader and philanthropist in the financial, health, education and cultural sectors, and members of the UWI Mona School of Business (MSB) Board, Peter Moses and Ambassador Douglas Saunders who were recognized for their contribution to public service. They were among the six recipients of this award.
Five to Receive Honorary Degrees at the Mona Campus Graduation Ceremonies

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona will recognize five Caribbean icons at its Graduation ceremonies November 4 and 5. They are: Ms. Minna Israel, Mr. Earl Jarrett and The Hon. Usain Bolt who will all receive the Honorary Doctor of Laws ( LLD) while Professor Lenworth Jacobs and Dr. Erna Brodber will receive the Doctor of Sciences (DSc) and Doctor of Letters (DLitt) respectively.
UWI, Mona and HEART Trust / NTA Sign MOU

The University of the West Indies (UWI, Mona Campus) and the HEART Trust/National Training Agency (NTA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) deepening their partnership in educational and other areas of development, on Tuesday (October 25).
Under the MoU, signed by Mona Principal, Professor Gordon Shirley, and HEART Trust Executive Director, Dr. Carolyn Hayle, HEART/NTA will provide internship spaces for university students in their colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes; access to HEART incubator facilities for UWI graduates interested in entrepreneurship; and expose UWI lecturers to the competency-based education training methodology.
