Mona School of Business (MSB) Tops US-Based Business Plan Competition

Students of the Mona School of Business (MSB) of the University of the West Indies (UWI), who participated in a recently concluded Opportunity Funding Corporation Innovation & Entrepreneurship (OFCIE) -- a Business Plan competition for historically Black Colleges and Universities, in Atlanta, USA, placed first in the international competition, taking the cup for the first time as well as receiving the best presentation award.  The MSB team was one of twenty-one schools which participated and was the only non-US based team.

Last year’s MSB team also won the inaugural trophy for “Best Presentation”, making this year, two consecutive wins in Presentation Skills for the Jamaican team. 

Mark Figueroa Promoted to Rank of Professor

The University of the West Indies, Mona is pleased to announce the promotion of Mark Figueroa, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Mona to the position of Professor, with effect from February 9, 2011.

Mark Figueroa holds the Bachelor of Arts, and Master of Sciences degrees in Economics from The University of the West Indies, Mona and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He joined the staff of Department of Economics as a Teaching Assistant in 1974, was appointed Lecturer in 1978 and further promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2003.  He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences since 2004.

NDTC Performance in Miami Fund-Raiser for Rex Nettleford Foundation

The Rex Nettleford Foundation has received a significant boost with the donation of half a million Jamaican dollars from Jamaica Awareness Incorporated, a Florida-based, non-profit organization. The donation represents proceeds from the mounting of a performance of the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) at the Coral Spring Center for the Arts in Miami, Florida. 

Mervyn Morris Poems added to The Poetry Archive

Selected poems by Mervyn Morris, internationally acclaimed poet and retired Professor of Creative Writing and West Indian Literature, UWI, Mona are now accessible to audiences worldwide on the Poetry Archive, the world’s premier online collection of recordings of poets reading their work.

The Poetry Archive aims to bring the widest possible audience to the fullest possible range of English-language poetry being published around the world, and to complement that poetry with educational material of value both to the specialist and to the general reader.

Paul Aiken Elevated To IEEE Senior Member

Senior Engineer and Head of the Electronics Unit in the Department of Physics, at The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona, Dr Paul Aiken, has been elevated to the grade of Senior Member in the Institute of Electric and Electronics Engineering (IEEE),  the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

Only eight per cent (8%) of IEEE’s approximately 400,000 members hold the grade of Senior Member, which requires extensive experience, and reflects professional maturity and documented achievements of significance. Dr Aiken is the second member of staff at The UWI, Mona to achieve this honour, the other being Dr. Halden Morris, senior lecturer in the Institute of Education.

Dr. Marcia Roye, UWI Lecturer is the First Jamaican to Receive L’Oreal – UNESCO Fellowship Women in Science Prize

Dr. Marcia Roye, Lecturer in Biotechnology at The University of the West Indies, Mona recently returned from Paris where she was presented with the L’Oreal-UNESCO Special Fellowship Grant 2011, to mark the centennial of Marie Curie’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Marie Cure is the first woman to have won a Nobel Prize and the only woman to have won in two different sciences, Chemistry and Physics.

Parchment Breaks Sprint Hurdles Record at Gibson Relays

Hansle Parchment, a scholarship athlete at UWI, Mona who is in his second year in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences erased the 110M Hurdles record in a time of 14:09 seconds at the recent Gibson Relays held at the National Stadium. The runner up spot in this race went to Deuce Carter, another scholarship recipient at UWI, Mona pursuing a major in Philosophy.

UWI Mona male and female teams also contested the 4x100 m and 4x400 m relays and finished 6th in the Clubs and Institutions category of the relay carnival.

Professor Shepherd Speaks at 10th UN Human Rights Council Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent

Professor Verene Shepherd, University Director, Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) will speak during the tenth session of the UN Human Rights Council´s Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. The meeting will take place from March 28 to April 1, 2011 in Geneva, Switzerland.

As the Caribbean and Latin America representative to the UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, Professor Shepherd will share on the topic, “Obstacles to the Creation of Afrocentric Societies in the Commonwealth Caribbean”. She will discuss the reasons behind this resistance to the African culture and tradition in the West and the consequences for the people of the Caribbean.

UWI, Mona and Business Community Partner in Annual Graduate Recruitment Programme to Provide Employment Opportunity

Final year students at The University of the West Indies, Mona will be a part of the three week long annual Graduate Recruitment programme starting on Monday, March 21. The programme is organized by the Office of Placement and Career Services, UWI, Mona. It provides an opportunity for students to have a “guaranteed interview” with potential employers while affording employers a convenient and cost effective means of recruiting from a highly qualified pool of applicants.

UWI Conference to Explore Challenges of the Independence Experience of Small Developing Countries

The experiences of Small Developing Countries and the challenges encountered will be explored at the twelfth annual Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) Conference scheduled for March 23-25, 2011, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Jamaica, Mr. Brian Wynter, will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 starting at 5:30 pm. A major feature of the Conference is the Sir Arthur Lewis Distinguished Lecture which will be delivered by Dr. Franklin Knight, Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University on March 24 at 7:00 pm.
