UWI, Mona Hosts Medical Physics Lecture

The Department of Physics at UWI, Mona will host a public lecture which will share the experiences of the Medical Physics Programme at University of São Paulo, Brazil in clinical and research. The event is set for Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 5:30 pm at Physics Lecture Room A, UWI. Dr. Patrícia Nicolucci, Professor, Medical Physics, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil will be the speaker on this occasion.  
 
The university community is invited to attend this event. 
 
Dr Patrícia Nicolucci is a physicist with clinical training in Radiation Therapy and a certified Radiological Protection Supervisor by National Nuclear Energy Commission from Brazil. She is a professor in the undergraduate program in Medical Physics and in the graduate program in Physics Applied in Medicine and Biology from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she also advisers master and doctoral students. Her primary research focuses on Physics applied to Radiotherapy and Dosimetry, with special focus on reference dosimetry, in vivo dosimetry, treatment protocols and Monte Carlo applications.
 
The University of São Paulo is a pioneer in Medical Physics research and education in Latin America. The Physics Department at Ribeirão Preto holds a graduate program in Medical Physics since 1986 and the first undergraduate program in Medical Physics in Brazil since 2000. Also, a 2-years clinical training program in Radiological Physics is held by the University Hospital since 1982. 
 
The undergraduate Medical Physics program receives 40 new students every year offering a strong Physics core disciplines along with interdisciplinary, applied and professional disciplines for a total of 5 years.  An obligatory field training of 300 hours minimum has to be attended by all the students. As the great majority of the students are interested in clinical areas, the University Hospital, located inside the campus, offers clinical training in Radiation Therapy, Diagnostic Radiology, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Ultra sound and Radiological Protection.
 
The University of the West Indies, Mona is also offering undergraduate and graduate degree programmes in Medical Physics. The first batch of undergraduates who had pursued a minor in Medical Physics graduated in 2010.
