UWI, Mona Hosts Daphne Douglas Distinguished Lecture in Her Honour

The Daphne Douglas Distinguished Lecture organized by Department of Library and Information Studies takes place on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 5:30 pm at the Faculty of Law Lecture Theatre. The Lecture seeks to hounour Professor Emerita Daphne Douglas for her contribution to Library and Information Science in the Caribbean and the development of the Department of Library and Information Studies at UWI, Mona.
 

Department of Community Health and Psychiatry Raises Funds for Ward 21

The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry at UWI, Mona seeks to raise funds for Ward 21, University Hospital of the West Indies for Mental Health Week. The university community is invited to support a Basil Dawkins Production entitled, "Get Your Black Hands Off Her" directed by Douglas Prout.  The Production shows on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 8 pm at the Little Theatre, 4 Tom Redcam Drive. 
 
Tickets cost $1500 and may be had at the Department of Psychiatry. Interested persons may telephone 927-2492. 
 

Sports Awards Ceremony 2012

The annual Sports Awards ceremony is slated to take place on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 7 pm at the Mona Visitors Lodge and Conference Centre. On this occasion outstanding student athletes will be recognized for their participation in sporting activities at the collegiate, national and international level.

Natural Hazards Atlas of Jamaica Launched at UWI, Mona

Capturing the impact of common natural hazards that affect Jamaica is the newly released Natural Hazards Atlas of Jamaica by Parris Lyew-Ayee Jnr. and Rafi Ahmad, UWI experts. The book will be launched on Wednesday, September 26 at 6 pm at the Blue Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona. 
 

UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award Continues to Recognize Excellence in Teaching

The UWI, in association with Guardian Life Limited hosts the annual UWI/Guardian Life Limited Premium Teaching Award Ceremony on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 6 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Todd Zakrajsek, Educational Developer and Associate Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The presentation is entitled, “The 21st Century University Teacher: Staying Engaged”. 
 
The Award Ceremony is an occasion where UWI, Mona academics are recognized for excellence in teaching and topical pedagogical topics are explored. 
 

UWI, Mona Lecture Looks at UN Sanctions and Its Implications

The Department of Government and Quality Assurance Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona present a seminar entitled, The Impact of UN Sanctions. Professor Thomas Biersteker of Graduate Institute of Geneva will share on this occasion. The Lecture takes place on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 5:30 pm at Lecture Room 3, Faculty of Law, UWI, Mona. 
 
The Lecture will look at the social, political and economic implications of UN Sanctions.

UWI, Mona Receives New Language Lab

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at UWI, Mona in association with The Embassy of Japan and The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will host an Official Handing Over Ceremony for the presentation of the New Language Laboratory. The event takes place on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 4 p.m. in the Multi-functional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona Campus.
 

Public Lecture – Language in Jamaica

“Language in Jamaica –Then and Now: 50th Year Reflections” is the title of the public lecture organized by the Department of Language, Linguistics & Philosophy at UWI, Mona.  Professor Hubert Devonish, Coordinator,  Jamaica Language Unit at UWI, Mona will deliver the Lecture slated for Friday, September 28, 2012 at 5:30 pm at the Multi-functional Room. 
 
This forum is especially timely as stakeholders are concerned about the 2012 CSEC results as well as the imminent entry of Jamaican Creole into the formal domain. The forum will reflect on the changes that have taken place in language attitude and language use over the last fifty years. It will also allow an opportunity to look to the future and plan the way forward.
 

Energy Lecture Examines A Realistic Energy Mix

The Department of Physics, the University of the West Indies will host the ninth lecture in its Energy Series entitled: “A Realistic Energy Mix including RE and Balancing Climate”. The Lecture will be delivered by Mr. Valentine Fagan, Vice President of Generation Expansion at JPS on Tuesday September 25, 2012 at 5.30 p.m. in the Physic Lecture Room B.   Comments will be given by Professor A. Anthony Chen.  
 
The Lecture is one of a 12 part monthly series examining the intersection points between Energy Demand and Supply and Climate Change. The following lecture in the series slated for October will examine the urgent imperative of a coherent energy policy. 
 

UWI, Mona Hosts Lecture to Mark 150th Anniversary of Chattel Slavery

Dr. Raymond Brown, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission examines the topic Chattel Slavery in the United States of America in a public lecture organized by the Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona and the Embassy of the United States, Kingston. The Lecture is entitled, “Unfolding History: Chattel Slavery in the U.S.A. The Sesquicentennial Anniversary of its Abolition and Concerns about Modern day Resurgence of Slavery”. The event is set to take place on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 3 pm at the Multi Functional Room, Main Library. 
 
The Lecture will commemorate the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of the abolition of chattel slavery in the United States on September 22.
