UWI, Mona Hosts Medical Physics Lecture

The Department of Physics at UWI, Mona will host a public lecture which will share the experiences of the Medical Physics Programme at University of São Paulo, Brazil in clinical and research. The event is set for Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 5:30 pm at Physics Lecture Room A, UWI. Dr. Patrícia Nicolucci, Professor, Medical Physics, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil will be the speaker on this occasion.  
 
The university community is invited to attend this event. 
 

UWI,Mona Set to Defend Championship Title at UWI/ UTech Championship 2012

The third staging of the UWI/UTech Championship is set for Saturday, September 15, 2012 starting at 10am at the Mona Bowl. Three time winners and defending champions, Mona Pelicans, will compete to retain the title in seven sporting disciplines namely: football, netball, cricket, volleyball, basketball and rugby.  The Championship will be followed by Integration After- party with ZJ Chrome.
 
UWI, Mona students and University of Technology Jamaica students, staff and alumni are especially invited to support their teams. The public is also welcome. Admission is free. 

Matriculation Ceremony 2012

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host its annual Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for all first year students on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 4:00 p.m.
 
A Matriculation Ceremony is the occasion on which new students are formally recognized as members of a university. Their acceptance into the academic community is marked by the signing of the Matriculation Register. Students are invited to assemble on the lawns facing the Undercroft by 2:30 pm for the signing of the Matriculation Register at 2:45 pm. New students will be officially met and welcomed by senior management of the University including the Campus Principal, Faculty Deans and the Director of Student Services and Development.
 

Professor Emeritus Barry Higman to be Honoured at "History at Fifty" Conference at UWI, Mona

The Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona will honour Professor Emeritus Barry Higman during the Conference, History at Fifty slated for November 8-10, 2012. Professor Barry Higman will be honoured for his valuable contribution to institutional and curriculum development in the Department and the UWI, Jamaican and Caribbean History. He will receive special recognition during the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.
 

Rolf Richards Lecture 2012

“Non-Communicable Diseases in Public Health” is the title of the Rolf Richards Distinguished lecture hosted by the Department of Medicine, UWI, Mona.  Dr. Beverley Barnett, PAHO/ WHO Representative will deliver the lecture. The event is set to take place on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 7 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Regional Climate Change Workshop

The Climate Studies Group at Mona and the Cuban Institute of Meteorology present a Regional Training Workshop in Ensemble Climate Modelling. The Workshop takes place on August 20-29, 2012 each weekday from 9 am to 5 pm at the Department of Physics, UWI, Mona. The course will be led by Dr. Michael Taylor, Head, Department of Physics, UWI, Mona and Dr. Abel Centella, Scientific Director, Institute of Meteorology in Cuba.
 
The Workshop will explore topics including: Global Warming and Environmental Change, Climate Change Projections, Communicating Climate Change, Risk and Vulnerability Analysis and The Economics of Climate Change.

UWI, Mona Lecture Explores Reggae in the Pacific

Brent Clough, producer and presenter at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National, will deliver a lecture entitled, “Reggae in the Pacific:  Roots Beyond the Reef” to mark the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence.  The lecture takes place on Thursday, August 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona.
 
  Mr. Clough’s lecture is based on a digital exhibition on “Pacific Reggae” which he co-organised with Maud Page, Curator of Contemporary Pacific Art at the Queensland Art Gallery. The exhibition responds to the vital connections that musicians from Port Vila to Auckland and Honolulu to Honiara make with reggae culture.
 

Statue of Mahatma Gandhi Unveiled at UWI, Mona

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host the Unveiling of the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Courtyard in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona. The Unveiling Ceremony takes place on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 6 pm.
 
The Statue is a donation to the University from the Government of India.
 
The university community is invited to attend. 
 

Energy Lecture at UWI, Mona Examines Wind, Hydro and Wave

The Department of Physics, UWI, Mona will host the eighth lecture in its Energy Nexus Series entitled, ‘Options for Wind, Hydro, and Wave Systems’. Dr. Gary Jackson, Executive Director, the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) will deliver the Lecture on this occasion. The lecture is set to take place on Tuesday, July 10 at 5:30 pm at Physics Lecture Rm B, UWI Mona.

William Dennis Lecture Explores DNA in Medicine, Biotechnology and Science in Jamaica

“Exploring DNA in Medicine, Biotechnology and Science” is the title of the Eleventh William Dennis Memorial lecture. Professor Wayne McLaughlin, Head, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, Mona will deliver the Lecture.  The event takes place on Thursday July 19, 2012 at 5:00 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, University Hospital of the West Indies.
