PORTUGUESE COURSES

LEVEL I

PORT0101 (PGOIA) - BEGINNERS' PORTUGUESE I (PdR) (3 credits, Semester 1)
The aim of the course is to develop in participants receptive and productive skills that will enable them to use the target language effectively to communicate with native speakers in various social contexts. Classroom activities will be based on real life situations. Oral comprehension will be the main activity of the course.

PRE-REQUISITE: None

CONTENT:            7 units, each comprising vocabulary, dialogue, grammatical structures, and reading passages.

INSTRUCTION:    6 hours per week

EVALUATION: a) 5 In-course tests: 60%

PORT0102 (PGOI B) - BEGINNERS' PORTUGUESE II (PdR) (3 credits, Semester 2
The aim of the course is to continue to develop mastery of the basic grammar and writing of the Portuguese language in various social contexts. Classroom activities will be based on real life situations. The course will focus on oral and reading comprehension.

PRE-REQUISITE: A pass in PORT0101 (PG01A)

CONTENT:            8 units, each comprising vocabulary, dialogue, grammatical structures, and reading passages

                               Selections of texts from prominent Brazilian authors

INSTRUCTION:    6 hours per week: 4 tutorial classes, 1 conversation and 1 lab classes

EVALUATION: a) 5 In-course tests: 60%  
b) Final Exam (2 hrs.): 40%  

 

PORT1001 (PG10A)- PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE IA (3 credits, Semester 1)
The course is designed to further develop receptive and productive competence and to provide further input for sociolinguistic fluency in Portuguese.  Students will be presented with cultural situations which will allow them to advance beyond routine situations and equip them for competent interaction in the target language.

PRE-REQUISITE: A Pass in PORT0102 (PG01B)

TEXTS:                 Hand-out provided by Instructor (to be purchased from the Department)
                              

INSTRUCTION:    6 hours per week: 4 tutorial classes, 1 conversation and 1 lab classes

EVALUATION: a) 5 In-course tests: 60%

PORT1002 (PG10B)- PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE IB (3 credits, Semester 2)
The course is the second part of PORT1001 and is designed to build on the receptive and productive competence acquired in the first module as well as to increase students’ sociolinguistic fluency in Portuguese.  Students will be presented with cultural situations which will allow them to advance beyond routine situations and equip them for competent interaction in the target language.

PRE-REQUISITE: A Pass in PORT1001 (PG10A)
