The UWI and India's Rajasthan Royals professional cricket team partner to create educational courses

In a landmark partnership, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and India’s Royals Sports Group-owned franchise, Rajasthan Royals have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for both parties to work together to co-create specialised educational courses for budding sports scholars worldwide.

The UWI mourns the loss of legal luminary Suzanne Ffolkes-Goldson

The UWI Mona Community is heartbroken as we mourn the loss of our distinguished colleague, Suzanne Ffolkes-Goldson who transitioned on October 2, 2023. At the time of her passing Mrs. Ffolkes-Goldson was a Senior Lecturer and interim Dean in the Faculty of Law.

Mrs. Ffolkes-Goldson joined The University of the West Indies, and taught at the Cave Hill Campus between 1989 and 1995 before joining the Mona staff as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Law in 1996. During her tenure, she served in various leadership roles in the Faculty for approximately 18 years.

The UWI 2023 Graduation Season Officially Begins

Over 7,500 new ‘UWI Pelicans’ are expected to receive their diplomas as the 2023 graduation season at The University of the West Indies commences on Saturday, October 7. The first ceremony takes place at the regional university’s Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda, marking the newest Campus’ fourth graduating class.

Valedictorian, Ms Kendra Thomas who earned a Bachelor of Education with First Class Honours, will represent The Five Islands Campus Graduating Class of 2023.

UWI Prison Project Hosts Graduation Ceremony

Following five months of face-to-face teaching and learning at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, eight (8) inmates and two correctional officers, successfully completed a Certificate of Achievement program in Entertainment Business, which was offered through the Institute of Caribbean Studies at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona.

This journey of education and personal growth concluded at The UWI Mona Prison Project Certificate Ceremony on August 22 in the Chapel at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre (TSACC).

October 4 is significant for The University of the West Indies (The UWI) as it marks 75 years since the official opening of its inaugural Campus in Mona, Jamaica. On this day in 1948, The UWI (then called the University College of the West Indies) held its first class for 33 medical students—a chemistry lecture by Professor Dr. Cedric Hassall.

Jamaica College graduate is top UWI Matriculant

 
Orville Deluke Daley, a first-year student in the Faculty of Science and Technology, is the 2023/2024 top matriculant for The UWI, Mona Campus. Orville secured a full UWI Open scholarship when he matriculated to the number one ranked University in the Caribbean with 10 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects, and 13 Cape Units — 12 with straight A-profiles.

The UWI hosts Africa-CARICOM Day celebration

Ms Sandrea Maynard, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Global Affairs at The UWI chairs the Africa-Caricom Day proceedings while Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor, The UWI and the Most Honourable P.J. Patterson, Statesman-in-Residence, The UWI look on from the head table.

Caricom has been designated as the sixth region of the African continent. The region commemorated the second annual Africa-CARICOM Day on September 7, signaling an ongoing commitment to strengthened relationships between the two populations.
