Application Guidelines for UWI Mona New Initiative Grants
Please note that each application MUST be accompanied by letters of support from both the applicant’s Dean of Faculty and Head of Department. Failure to submit these letters will result in the application not being considered for a New Initiative Grant.
- Cover Page
The cover page should provide the following information:
- Name of applicant; address and telephone/fax number(s) at the UWI Mona; and, an e-mail address. (Provide separate contact information for multiple applicants and identify the Principal Investigator(s) with an asterisk‘*’).
- Title of the proposed research
- Purpose of request (Application for a New Initiative Grant)
- Expected project commencement date
- Expected project ending date
- Main Anticipated Outputs and their mode of Dissemination (e.g. articles and targeted journals; books/monographs and targeted publishers; works of art; policy documents and technical reports; curriculum materials; new or enhanced income generation opportunities; new products and associated intellectual property.
- Amount of funds being requested (in Jamaican dollars).
- Table of Contents (Please list items and corresponding page numbers)
- Project Abstract (Please provide a brief narrative not exceeding 200 words)
The project abstract should be a concise statement of:
- what the project is seeking to achieve;
- why it is important to do the research;
- the research methods to be employed;
- what new knowledge is anticipated; and,
- the potential impact of the research findings.
- Project Description (maximum: 1000 words inclusive of figures and tables)
- Introduction or Background
- Identify the research questions/problems, which the proposed research is seeking to address.
- Evaluate the current body of knowledge.
- Identify gaps, unresolved or new issues to be targeted by the research, why they should be targeted and the likely significance of the new information anticipated.
- Indicate the potential usefulness of the research.
- Identify the Project’s Aim and Objectives: Please state a broad overarching aim followed by a set of specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound (SMART) objectives for the project.
- Methodology: Please outlines the research methodology for the proposed work, and indicate any innovative new strategies, which are likely to distinguish your project as a high quality research exercise.
- Work Plan: Kindly provide timelines for the various activities of the proposed research project. Also, identify the indicators for success for the different objectives and how they will be measured and evaluated.
- Project Budget: Kindly indicate the amount of funding required to cover all research activities, such as equipment, chemical or biological supplies, salaries and allowances, questionnaires and interviews, and travel. Also, provide supporting quotations from suppliers of the goods and services required for the proposed project. You may contact the bursary for assistance with salary determination.

Please list all active research grants and applications, which have been submitted to funding agencies over the last five years.

Please provide a list of your relevant research and publications completed over the last five years.

Please list, as appropriate, the key references which are relevant to the proposed research.
- Relevant Appendices
Please provide additional information relevant to the proposal: e.g. letters indicating clearance by the ethics committee, additional funding support, invitation or acceptance to work at other institutions, quotations for goods and services required by the project.
