Speakers - Vulnerability (Barbados)

Ms. Janelle Husbands email:janellehusbands(at)gmail.com

Janelle Husbands has been a journalist at Barbados’ oldest newspaper, the Barbados Advocate, for the past decade. She considers herself to be an ‘all-rounder’ covering a broad spectrum of topics, including the danger of environmental degradation and the potential impact of climate change on small island developing states.

A social commentator, over the past seven years she has been voicing her opinion in a candid column in the Barbados Advocate, where she has written on a range of topics. Janelle recently brought attention to the virtual wake-up call around the world following the devastating passage of super-storm Sandy in North America and its link to climate change.

While she does not purport to be an expert on the topic, she believes that her observations over the past ten years can give an informed view of some of the shortcomings and successes in the field and identify ways on how the message could be disseminated to an audience that is not always receptive.

Ms. Judi Clarke email:judi.clarke(at)caribsave.org

Ms. Judi Clarke is the Caribbean Regional Coordinator of the CARIBSAVE Partnership, headquartered in Barbados. She holds responsibility for the general oversight of all technical and operational aspects of projects being implemented by CARIBSAVE throughout the Caribbean Region; with specific management responsibility for some initiatives.

Ms. Clarke holds a Master of Science Degree with specialization in climate change, and is a climate change adaptation specialist and environment management professional with over ten years of experience in the Caribbean. She has specific expertise in the areas of targeted communications and outreach, policy development, risk management, development of adaptation strategies and action plans and environmental impact assessment.

As social considerations are an integral component of climate change adaptation, her work has also looked at the intrinsic relationships between climate change and livelihoods, gender, poverty and community development.

Ms. Natalie Hutchinson email:natalie.hutchinson(at)caribsave.org

Trained originally as a Physical Oceanographer, Natalie has 15 years experience in environmental consultancy and research both in the United Kingdom (UK) and the Caribbean. She worked as a numerical modeller for ABP Research (now ABP Mer) on coastal hydrodynamic and sediment transport projects before moving to the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK. There she worked on a comparison of global climate model output to hydrographic data collected in Drake Passage and also participated in an Antarctic research cruise.

Since moving to Barbados in 2001 Natalie has become more specialized in climate change issues following completion (with Distinction) of the Masters programme in Natural Resource Management, specialising in Climate Change at the University of the West Indies. She has worked on climate change vulnerability assessments, trained staff from the Department for International Development (DfID) in the Caribbean, on climate change issues and worked on many other environmental assessments and implementation strategies in Barbados and the wider Caribbean. She has also recently prepared materials for an online course on Climate Change for CERMES at UWI Cave Hill.

As one of the co-authors of the Vulnerability and Capacity Assessments (VCA) Manual, Ms. Hutchinson has extensive awareness and understanding of the methodology and is currently undertaking some elements of VCA as part of the Second National Communication process for Barbados. She has also contributed to the MACC pilot of the method focusing on tourism in Speightstown, Barbados.

Currently, Ms. Hutchinson is a Senior Programme Officer with the Caribsave Partnership.
