Graduate Degrees, Rules and Regulations
MPhil
The MPhil degree is by thesis and must not normally take
more than 3 years (a departmental regulation). This is a research
degree and candidates are expected to have qualities necessary for
independent research.
Admission to the MPhil requires at least a second class BSc. (General)
degree or its equivalent. In cases where the equivalence of the
candidate's degree cannot be established, a preliminary examination
at the Final Year Examination level may be required. This examination
must be passed within the first year of graduate studies.
The research project is normally chosen by the candidate from
a selection of suitable projects submitted by various staff
members. The selection of a particular project normally determines
the candidates supervisor. A review committee is also set
up to help ensure that the candidate is progressing satisfactorily
and each project is reviewed every 3-4 months.
