Living at Mona
Housing
There are a limited number of apartments for postgraduate students
on campus. However, furnished rooms and other modes of accommodation
can be found in neighboring suburbs. The is also a University Accommodation
Bureau which will arrange accommodation for students.
Shopping
Most commodities are available in shopping centers located in
Liguanea, Constant Spring, Half-Way-Tree, New Kingston and surrounding
environs in Kingston. Since the climate is always warm and dress
is informal, clothing expenses are lower than in temperate climates.
There are also several fast-food and grocery outlets on the campus.
Transportation
The city of Kingston operates a bus system which is relatively
inexpensive, but suffers from slow and crowded service. There are
many easily accessed taxi services. The University itself provides
a shuttle service around the campus and its environs.
Student Activities
There are a large number of clubs and societies on campus in which
students with different backgrounds, but common interests participate.
The sports clubs offer a wide range of recreational activities
throughout the academic year - tennis, soccer, rugby, cricket, basket-ball,
swimming, badminton, field hockey, caving and many others. Here
most students are encouraged to participate rather than be expert
at any particular sport. Every two years, the Sports committee organizes
inter-campus games with the St. Augustine and Cave Hill campuses.
Each event, one of the three campuses act as host for the games.
The cultural activities on campus include drama, creative dancing,
music and other forms of artistic expression. The University
has found itself in a unique cultural setting. The West Indies
consists of peoples of different racial and cultural backgrounds
- African, East Indian, Chinese, Amer-Indian and European,
and expectedly the student body reflects the racial mixture
of the West Indies. The University has a modern and beautiful
fully architectured Arts Center, given to the West Indian
peoples by a philanthropic organization to experiment and
develop the Creative Arts in the Caribbean. Its facilities
are available to members of the student body. Many performing
groups and artists from the rest of the Caribbean, Africa
and Central America visit this center occasionally.
