ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

English Language is compulsory for admission to all programmes. The English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) is used to assess whether persons applying to pursue undergraduate degree programmes at the UWI, Mona Campus possess a satisfactory level of writing and reading proficiency in English for university academic purposes.

Exemption from Sitting ELPT

Applicants in the categories (a-f) below are NOT required to sit the test:

a) Persons with any ONE of the following English Language qualifications:

i. Grade 1 - CXC/CSEC English A examination

ii. Grade A - GCE O’Level English Language examination

iii. Grade A - GCE A/O’Level General Paper examination

iv. Grades 1 & 2-CAPE Communication Studies

v. Grade B+ or above-College English Skills I or II - College of Bahamas

vi. Grade B+ or above - Advanced Communication or Business Communication- University of Technology

vii. Grade B+ or above-Freshman Composition I or II - Northern Caribbean University

viii. Grade B or above-college English course from an approved university.

 

b) Persons who are already holders of an undergraduate degree from the UWI or from an approved university.

c) Persons holding a UWI Certificate in Advanced Nursing Education and Administration or a UWI Licentiate of Theology.

d) Persons holding a UWI Diploma in Media and Communications who have passed the course COMM5201-Media and Language.

e) Persons who passed the UWI Mona ELPT in 2007 onward.

f) Persons who successfully completed any of the following UWI English Language courses within the last five years (i.e. 2007 onwards): UC010; UC10A; UC10B; UC10C; UC10D; UC10L; UC10H; UC120; FOUN1001; FOUN1002; COMS1001; COMS1002; FOUN1003; FOUN1008.

Entry requirements:

4 yrs  - Part Time

a) CXC/CSEC or GCE O’Level passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects including English Language. Grade requirements for CXC/CSEC are General Proficiency, Grades I or II pre-1998 and Grades I, II, or III from June 1998, and

b) CAPE or GCE A’Level passes in at least one (1) subject. CAPE subject must consist of both Unit 1 and Unit 2 or

c) High School Grade 12 transcript with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a minimum SAT 1 score of 1500.

3 yrs - Full Time

a) CXC/CSEC or GCE O’Level passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects including English Language. Grade requirements for CXC/CSEC are General Proficiency, Grades I or II pre-1998 and Grades I, II, or III from June 1998; and

b) CAPE or GCE A’Level passes in a minimum of two (2) subjects. CAPE subject must consist of both Unit 1 and Unit 2; or

c) An Associate degree, Diploma and/or Certificate from other approved tertiary institutions having attained a B+ average or a minimum GPA of 2.5; or

d) High School Grade 12 transcript with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum SAT I score of 1700 plus a minimum of two (2) SAT II subjects at a score of 500 or above or successful completion of Advanced Placement Courses or the International Baccalaureate programme.

b) CAPE or GCE A’Level passes in at least one (1) subject. CAPE subject must consist of both Unit 1 and Unit 2 or

c) High School Grade 12 transcript with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a minimum SAT 1 score of 1500. 

3 yrs - Full Time

c) An Associate degree, Diploma and/or Certificate from other approved tertiary institutions having attained a B+ average or a minimum GPA of 2.5; or

d) High School Grade 12 transcript with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum SAT I score of 1700 plus a minimum of two (2) SAT II subjects at a score of 500 or above or successful completion of Advanced Placement Courses or the International Baccalaureate programme.

 

Class times: Day OR evening (6-9 p.m.) and Saturdays

B.Sc. Tourism Management:

2 yrs – Associate degree in Tourism Management with 2.5 GPA or greater.

FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES:

 

B.Sc. Nursing

Entry requirements:

4 yrs - Full Time

a) CXC/CSEC or GCE O’Level passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects. Subject requirements are English Language, Biology/Integrated Science/Human and Social Biology, Mathematics and 2 other approved subjects. Grade requirements for CXC/CSEC are General Proficiency, Grades I or II pre-1998 and Grades I, II, or III from June 1998; and

b) CAPE or GCE A’Level passes in a minimum of two (2) subjects. CAPE subject must consist of both Unit 1 and Unit 2 from either Mathematics, Physics or Biology and any other as specified by Nursing Council of Jamaica or

c) An Associate degree from other approved tertiary institutions having attained a B+ average or a minimum GPA of 2.5; or

d) High School Grade 12 transcript with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum SAT I score of 1700 plus a minimum of two (2) SAT II subjects at a score of 500 or above or successful completion of Advanced Placement Courses or the International Baccalaureate programme.

Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

Entry requirements:

3 yrs - Full Time

a) CXC/CSEC or GCE O’Level passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects. Subject requirements are Mathematics and English Language. Grade requirements for CXC/CSEC are General Proficiency, Grades I or II pre-1998 and Grades I, II, or III from June 1998; and

b) CAPE or GCE A’Level passes in a minimum of two (2) subjects. CAPE subject must consist of both Unit 1 and Unit 2; or

c) An Associate degree, Diploma and/or Certificate from other approved tertiary institutions having attained a B+ average or a minimum GPA of 2.5; or

d) High School Grade 12 transcript with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum SAT I score of 1700 plus a minimum of two (2) SAT II subjects at a score of 500 or above or successful completion of Advanced Placement Courses or the International Baccalaureate programme.

e) A Bachelors or Masters degree from an approved University.

FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:

B.Sc. Information Technology

3 yrs - Full Time

a) CXC/CSEC or GCE O’Level passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects. Subject requirements are Mathematics and English Language. Grade requirements for CXC/CSEC are General Proficiency, Grades I or II pre-1998 and Grades I, II, or III from June 1998; and

b) CAPE or GCE A’Level passes in a minimum of two (2) subjects one of which must be a science subject. CAPE subject must consist of both Unit 1 and Unit 2; or

c) An Associate degree in Mathematics, Information Technology or the Sciences from other approved tertiary institutions having attained a B+ average or a minimum GPA of 2.5; or 

d) A Teaching Diploma in Mathematics, Information Technology or the Sciences from other approved tertiary institutions having attained a B+ average or a minimum GPA of 2.5; or

e) High School Grade 12 transcript with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum SAT I score of 1700 plus a minimum of two (2) SAT II subjects at a score of 500 or above or successful completion of Advanced Placement Courses or the International Baccalaureate programme.
