In this course students will be able to acquire knowledge of computer, how the computer affects teaching and learning. It will also enable them to use the computer as a tool for manipulation of text, numbers and graphics; creating presentations; publishing; and information transfer.

ED24E - The Psychology of Science Teaching and Learning
This course is designed to enable participants to understand and critique some of the relatively long-standing and contemporary psychological theories that underpin students’ cognitive development as well as their practical implications for the effective teaching and learning of science.

UC010 - Fundamentals of Written English
A compulsory remedial course for those persons who failed the English Proficiency Test.

BL10M - Plant Diversity
Evolution in various plant groups using appropriate examples from each group. A study of the morphology, anatomy, reproductive structures and development in the following plant groups: Algae and Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. The Taxonomy of some plant families to illustrate the flora of Jamaica. Non-agricultural benefits to man from various plant groups.

ED24G - Teaching Methodologies in Science
This course encourages teaches to take a critical look at their own practice and expose them to a range of teaching strategies that are available for use in the science classroom.

Year 2

ED20X - Issues and Perspectives in Education
This course seeks to develop the students’ understanding of the interplay of forces, which affect teaching and learning and influence educational practice and policy. Students should thereby come to appreciate the critical and dynamic role they play as the educators of the citizens of tomorrow.

ED34J - The Sociology of Science Teaching and Learning
This course seeks to deepen participants’ understanding of some of the sociological factors that influence science curriculum content, the nature of science classroom communication and interactions and their practical implications for the teaching and learning of science.

BLl0L - Animal Diversity
An introduction to the major phyla of animals with emphasis on levels of organization, evolutionary history and adaptive radiation.

FD13A - Law, Governance, Economy and Society in the Caribbean
This is a multi-disciplinary course of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It will introduce students to some of the major institutions in Caribbean society. This exposure is to both the historical and contemporary aspects of Caribbean society, including Caribbean legal, political and economic systems. In addition, Caribbean culture and Caribbean social problems are discussed.

ED34C - Assessment of Science
This course provides an opportunity for equipping the secondary school science teacher to be acquainted with the assessment possibilities that exist and be proficient at using each type of assessment strategy to enhance learning in the classroom.

Year 3

D34A - Selected Topics in Science
It is hoped that this course will raise the students’ knowledge of the physical sciences and enhance their teaching competence.

BB10A - Cells, Biomolecules and Genetics
Microscopical techniques to study living and fixed cells. Structural organization of cells. Specialization in cells. Basic functional processes in cells and their regulation. Mitosis and meiosis.

BL20N - Ecology
Ecology and its domain, autecology and synecology. Distribution and abundance. Geographic range habitat and niche. Abiotic and biotic environment, populations communities and ecosystems.

ED34Q - An Introduction to Secondary School Science Practical
This course is intended to equip teachers with the skills to conduct practical work in schools with special emphasis on the school-based assessment for the CXC science subjects.

Year 4

ED30Z - Investigating our Teaching
This course is designed to aid in the understanding of the role of the teacher as a learner, researcher, self-evaluator and reflective practitioner. It provides an opportunity for students to apply their know-ledge of the teaching learning process in implementing an innovative teaching experiment to address a problem in their classrooms, to reflect critically on the experience and to write a report, which informs their future practice.

BT21B - Seed Plants
Structure, evolution and significance of the seed plants illustrated by reference to select Gymnosperm and Angiosperm groups. The significant biological distinction between major groups and the formal processes by which species and higher taxa are derived. Development of classification systems Artificial, Natural and Phylogenetic. Taxonomic value of characters Morphological, Anatomical, Cytological, Phytochemical, Ecological and Geographical. Numerical Taxonomy.

BL20K - Evolutionary Biology
Variation and evolution: a historical perspective. Polymorphism, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, selection, migration and genetic drift in relation to population size. Evolution below the species level, clines, deception and sex ratio, with special reference to man. Speciation, phylogeny and the evolution of the hominids.
