Year 1

FD10A - English for Academic Purposes
This is a cross-disciplinary course, which is designed to provide a firm base for Communications Courses and for Courses in English for special purposes linked with specific disciplines.

ED20Y – Introduction to Computers in Education
In this course students will be able to acquire knowledge of computer, how the computer affects teaching and learning. It will also enable them to use the computer as a tool for manipulation of text, numbers and graphics; creating presentations; publishing; and information transfer.

C10J - Introductory Chemistry 1
Pre-requisites: C06Jand C06K or its equivalent
Atomic theory. Interactions between atoms, ions and molecules. Crystal structures and symmetry elements. Born-Haber cycle. Molecular orbital theory for homo- and heteronuclear diatomic molecules. Thermodynamics, Energetic and Molecular Structure. Aliphatic and Aromatic Chemistry – a mechanistic approach.

ED24E - The Psychology of Science Teaching and Learning
This course is designed to enable participants to understand and critique some of the relatively long-standing and contemporary psychological theories that underpin students’ cognitive development as well as their practical implications for the effective teaching and learning of science.

UC010 - Fundamentals of Written English
A compulsory remedial course for those persons who failed the English Proficiency Test.

LABS - Introductory Chemistry Laboratory

C10K - Introductory Chemistry 2
A detailed study of Main Group elements based on their position in the Periodic Table. The properties of oxygen and its compounds. Coordination compounds of First Row Transition Elements and their stereo-chemical features. Introduction of Crystal Field Theory, Stability of metal complexes, Isomerism, Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry. Kinetics – order and molecularity. Enthalpy and Entropy of activation. Synthesis and Reactions of functionalized organic compounds. Introduction to Aromatic Chemistry.

ED24G - Teaching Methodologies in Science
This course encourages teaches to take a critical look at their own practice and expose them to a range of teaching strategies that are available for use in the science classroom.

Year 2

ED20X – Issues and Perspectives in Education
This course seeks to develop the students’ understanding of the interplay of forces which affect teaching and learning and influence educational practice and policy. Students should thereby come to appreciate the critical and dynamic role they play as the educators of the citizens of tomorrow.

ED34J - The Sociology of Science Teaching and Learning
This course seeks to deepen participants’ understanding of some of the sociological factors that influence science curriculum content, the nature of science classroom communication and interactions and their practical implications for the teaching and learning of science.

C20J - Analytical Chemistry
Pre-requisites: C10J and C10K
Statistical methods and their use in laboratory management. Types of errors, rejection of data, means and standard deviations and their use in testing analytical results and methods, quality control charts. Oxidation-reduction titrations and an introduction to the use of electrodes in analytical chemistry as illustrated by the pH electrode. Other ion selective electrodes. An introduction to spectroscopic methods as illustrated by Molecular Spectroscopy, including fluorescence, in the UV/VIS region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The components of Spectrometers. Applications of such methods. An introduction to Chromatography. General chromatographic principles of separation. An introduction to gas chromatography including instrumentation. Some illustrations of applications of Gas Chromatography.

LABS - Analytical Chemistry Laboratory

FD13A - English for Academic Purposes
This is a multi-disciplinary course of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It will introduce students to some of the major institutions in Caribbean society. This exposure is to both the historical and contemporary aspects of Caribbean society, including Caribbean legal, political and economic systems. In addition, Caribbean culture and Caribbean social problems are discussed.

C - Advanced Inorganic Chemistry

ED34C - Assessment of Science Teaching
This course provides an opportunity for equipping the secondary school science teacher to be acquainted with the assessment possibilities that exist and be proficient at using each type of assessment strategy to enhance learning in the classroom.

Year 3

C - Advanced Organic Chemistry

ED34A - Selected Topics in Science
It is hoped that this course will raise the students’ knowledge of the physical sciences and enhance their teaching competence. LABS - Advanced Inorganic and Advanced Organic Chemistry Laboratory

C - Chemistry in the Community

ED34Q - An Introduction to Secondary School Science Practical
This course is intended to equip teachers with the skills to conduct practical work in schools with special emphasis on the
school-based assessment for the CXC science subjects.

Year 4

C - Advanced Physical Chemistry

ED30Z - Investigating our Teaching
This course is designed to aid in the understanding of the role of the teacher as a learner, researcher, self-evaluator and reflective practitioner. It provides an opportunity for students to apply their know-ledge of the teaching learning process in implementing an innovative teaching experiment to address a problem in their classrooms, to reflect critically on the experience and to write a report, which informs their future practice.
