in Education
In this course students will be able to acquire knowledge of computer, how
the computer affects teaching and learning. It will
also enable them to use the computer as a tool for manipulation of text, numbers

ED25D - Developing Foreign Language
Skills
This course is designed to upgrade the teaching skills of graduates of Teachers’ Colleges
and to prepare pre-trained
teachers to function effectively in the secondary school. These teachers need
to be aware of current trends in foreign
language pedagogy and to see how these impact on objectives of teaching and
learning. Through the activities provided
in the course, the students will gain experience in putting these new ideas
into practice and will be better able to cope with
multi-level groups and gender differences.
F111 - French Language I [parts
1 and 2]
This course aims to develop students’ skills to the point where they
can write about a variety of topics with significant precision;
discuss concrete topics relating to particular interests and special fields
of competence with reasonable level of pronunciation;
understand the main ideas of most speech in standard French and follow essential
points of authentic discourse in areas
of special interest or knowledge. In addition, students completing this course
will have had the opportunity to increase their
global awareness and knowledge of contemporary societies where the language
is spoken.
ED25C - Pedagogical Developments
in Foreign Language Education
Foreign language students will benefit from studying the development of the
thrust towards the Communicative Approach
in foreign language teaching/learning. Since many of the traditional methods
of teaching still survive and are being used in
schools, it is important for students to be able to recognize these methods,
identify their weaknesses and come to see the
value and advantages of a communicative approach to foreign language teaching/learning.

FD13A - Law, Governance, Economy and Society in
the Caribbean
This is a multi-disciplinary course of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It
will introduce students to some of the major
institutions in Caribbean society. This exposure is to both the historical
and contemporary aspects of Caribbean society,
including Caribbean legal, political and economic systems. In addition, Caribbean
culture and Caribbean social problems
are discussed.
ED20X - Issues and Perspectives in
Education
This course seeks to develop the students’ understanding of the interplay
of forces, which affect teaching and learning and
influence educational practice and policy. Students should thereby come to
appreciate the critical and dynamic role they
play as the educators of the citizens of tomorrow.
F211 - French Language II [parts
1 and 2]
The aim of this course is to improve not only the students’ accuracy
but also their fluency so that they will feel at home in
a variety of language situations, from an informal conversation to the summary
of an article on a topical problem.
The course includes both structured pronunciation and grammar drills at an
advanced level and work of a freer nature;
comprehension and analysis of a wide range of contemporary French texts (oral
and written), resume, guided composition
and stylistic exercises. One hour per week of translation into French of contemporary
texts is also provided. Students are
expected to read widely and to keep up with current events in Francophone countries
by reading newspapers and periodicals.

F13C - Introduction to Literature in French
This course will consist of literary commentaries on passages of prose and
the study of two prescribed texts
[short novels or plays] by two authors. The texts will be selected from the
following authors: Corneille, Racine, Moliere,
Voltaire, Balzac, Flaubert, Zola, Sartre, Camus, Beckett and Ionesco.

in French
This course gives students practice in literary analysis through a study
of poems and short stories from Spanish America.
ED35C - Issues in Foreign Language
Education: Caribbean and Local
Perspectives
The course is designed mainly to examine local and regional conditions and
issues which impact on teaching and
learning a foreign language. It provides a forum for teachers to share their
knowledge and findings with co-participants in the
course, after having investigated an important aspect of foreign language teaching
and learning in the Caribbean region.
F311 - French Language III [parts
1 and 2]
The aim of this advanced practical course is to improve the students’ knowledge
and use of modern French. It involves written
and oral work, essay writing and translation from French into English during
the first semester and from English into French
during the second semester.
ED35M - Integrating Culture into
Foreign Language Teaching
The course will provide teachers with the knowledge and skills to guide their
students to relate to the culture of the foreign
language they are learning and to enjoy it. It is a stepping-stone to further
exploration of the multiple ways in which culture
may be incorporated into foreign language teaching.
F27B - The Development of Modern
French
Prerequisite F111
A study of the development of the French Language from the Middle Period to
the Modern Period. This course aims at fostering
a critical approach towards French grammar from the perspective of Modern Linguistics.
It will provide the students with an
overview of the history of the French language leading to the constitution
of Standard French, with an overview of the actual
diversity of regional French inside and outside France (Africa, Belgium, Canada,
West Indies, etc.). A variety of written and
audio-visual material will be used to illustrate the lectures.

F22N - Francophone Culture
This course offers an introduction to the culture of the French West Indies
and continental France. Some of the main areas
of study are: the political organization of France; the education system,
music, language, cuisine, and festivals.
ED30Z - Investigating our Teaching
This course is designed to aid in the understanding of the role of the teacher
as a learner, researcher, self-evaluator and
reflective practitioner. It provides an opportunity for students to apply their
know-ledge of the teaching learning process
in implementing an innovative teaching experiment to address a problem in their
classrooms, to reflect critically on the
experience and to write a report, which informs their future practice.
ED35H - Teaching Foreign Language
in Context
The course examines the essential role of context and contextual materials
in the foreign language acquisition process,
and assists participants in planning for teaching in context.
