Year 1

FD10A - English for Academic Purposes
This is a cross-disciplinary course, which is designed to provide a firm base for Communications Courses and for Courses in English for special purposes linked with specific disciplines.

ED20Y - Introduction to Computers in Education
In this course students will be able to acquire knowledge of computer, how the computer affects teaching and learning. It will also enable them to use the computer as a tool for manipulation of text, numbers and graphics; creating presentations; publishing; and information transfer.

UC010 - Fundamentals of Written English
A compulsory remedial course for those persons who failed the English Proficiency Test.

ED20X – Issues and Perspectives in Education
This course seeks to develop the students’ understanding of the interplay of forces which affect teaching and learning and influence educational practice and policy. Students should thereby come to appreciate the critical and dynamic role they play as the educators of the citizens of tomorrow.

ED29D - Practice in Planning Learning Experiences for the Social Studies/Geography Teacher
Through involvement in individual and group work tasks, planning and evaluation exercises, fieldwork and SBA activities, students will acquire competence in planning learning activities using the enquiry approach. The course is, essentially, of an investigative nature whereby participants are given the opportunity to implement enquiry/ discovery methods. Students learn about the university campus through discovery. The course enables students to undertake much practical work both as groups as well as individuals. Students work in groups in the field and report at various times in the classroom on the progress of the group. Group work skills documentary research and geographic investigative skills are all put into practice.

GG10A - Introduction to Human Geography
Population growth, distribution and movements, Population and resources, World food supply, Agricultural activity systems, Industrial location, power resources transportation systems, Economic growth in developing areas, Methods and problems of compilation, design and execution of various types of maps and diagrams, Introduction to quantitative analysis in geography.

ED29C – Enquiry Methods in Teaching Social Studies/Geography
This course introduces a range of geographical skills, methods and techniques of use to Social Studies/Geography teachers with practical examples for students to master.


Year 2

GG10B - Introduction to Physical Geography
Introduction to geomorphic processes. Weathering, earth structure, tectonics, volcanism. Elements of meteorology and climatology. Environmental systems. Introduction to the study of vegetation and soils. Introduction to aerial photography and field survey techniques. Exercises in geomorphology and climatology.

ED29E - Skills in Curriculum Planning for the Social Studies/Geography Teacher
To familiarize the student with concepts and procedures necessary for the effective planning of curriculum units, lessons and evaluatory procedures in Social Studies/Geography teaching in the classroom, conducting fieldwork, community surveys.

GG22A - Geosphere and Hydrosphere
An introduction to hillslope processes and movement on slopes, the work of rivers within a fluvial system, the work of waves, tides and currents in coastal zones, and beach and shoreline processes and landforms. An introduction to hydrology, components of the hydrological cycle, and the impact of human modification of the hydrological cycle.

ED39H – The Role of Social Studies/Geography in Secondary Education
To explore the nature and role of Social Studies as a school subject in the context of the Commonwealth Caribbean.


Year 3

GG22B - Atmosphere and Biosphere
The recognition of non-random patterns in species distribution, causal processes in species distribution, and an explanation of species distribution in space and time. Climatic variations in the tropics. The nature of the atmosphere near the ground. The dynamics of and the debate on global warming and climate change. Climate classifications.

FD13A - Law, Governance, Economy and Society in the Caribbean
This is a multi-disciplinary course of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It will introduce students to some of the major institutions in Caribbean society. This exposure is to both the historical and contemporary aspects of Caribbean society, including Caribbean legal, political and economic systems. In addition, Caribbean culture and Caribbean social problems are discussed.

GG21A - Urban Geography
An introduction to the key areas of urban geography, with a particular focus on land use and the planning of urban systems. Much of this theoretical framework of urban geography is based on studies of cities in developed countries, especially in North America.

ED39C – Secondary Schools Research and Selection in Social Studies/Geography
Through the selection of a number of topics from secondary Social Studies/Geography curricula in the region, students require the skills of content research, the selection and organization of material appropriate for secondary-level students, and effective communication in seminar style presentations. All students in the group are expected to acquire content form the presentations of their peers.


Year 4

GG21B - Geography and Development
An examination of global patterns of development and global processes of polarization and marginalization, which lead to disparities and deprivation. The course focuses on location theory models, especially those of Von Thunen and Weber.

ED30Z - Investigating our Teaching
This course is designed to aid in the understanding of the role of the teacher as a learner, researcher, self-evaluator and reflective practitioner. It provides an opportunity for students to apply their know-ledge of the teaching learning process in implementing an innovative teaching experiment to address a problem in their classrooms, to reflect critically on the experience and to write a report, which informs their future practice.

GG30C - Geography of the Caribbean
Analysis of physical and cultural patterns within the Caribbean area. A geographical evaluation of the origin, development and present-day outlines of settlement, cultures, resource use, economic structure and growth problems of selected Caribbean countries.
