Year 1

FD10 A - English For Academic Purposes
This is a cross-disciplinary course, which is designed to provide a firm base for Communications Courses and for Courses in English for special purposes linked with specific disciplines.

ED20Y - Introduction to Computers in Education
In this course students will be able to acquire knowledge of computer, how the computer affects teaching and learning. It will also enable them to use the computer as a tool for manipulation of text, numbers and graphics; creating presentations; publishing; and information transfer.

ME10A - Algebra
This course aims to give teachers some understanding of the nature of algebra and to develop skills and techniques common to CPE and A Level syllabuses which will be required for later mathematics courses.

UC010 - Fundamentals of Written English
A compulsory remedial course for those persons who failed the English Proficiency Test.

ME10B - Geometry
This course aims to allow teachers to appreciate the nature, purposes and history of Geometry in various forms in describing and working on properties of space.

ED22N - The Nature and Scope of Mathematics
The purpose of this course is to extend students’ knowledge of mathematics working in a variety of ways, which will include the use of graphic calculators and computers. In carrying out this work students will be encouraged to think about the experience of learning mathematics and consider the implications of this for their work as teachers.

ED22M - Children Learning Mathematics
This course provides an introduction to issues of learning generally and mathematics learning in particular. Each member of the course will work closely with an individual learner over a period of several weeks.


Year 2

ME22A - Introductory Calculus
Pre-requisite: ME10A and ME10A
This course is intended to provide the student with an initial understanding of differential and integral calculus and its applications.

ED22P - Analysis and Teaching of Mathematics
Pre-requisite: ED22M
This course builds on the knowledge and experience gained in ED22M and takes a critical look at classroom practice. It examines issues of teaching and learning in the lower secondary school, examines content, and emphasizes teaching strategies, which allow for the development of a ‘thinking’ classroom.

ME22B - Statistics and Probability
This course is to teach the basic concepts and some elementary methods in probability and statistical inference.

ED32F- Investigation and Problem Solving
This course aims to enable participants to experience investigating themselves and then develop the appropriate teaching skills for such work in their classrooms.

ED20X - Issues and Perspectives in Education
This course seeks to develop the students’ understanding of the interplay of forces, which affect teaching and learning and influence educational practice and policy. Students should thereby come to appreciate the critical and dynamic role they play as the educators of the citizens of tomorrow.

ED32J - Issues in the Teaching of Mathematics [Part 1]
This course provides the opportunity for students to develop a deeper understanding of some current issues in the teaching of mathematics in particular, curriculum development, assessment and providing for learners with special needs.


Year 3

ME22C - Analytic Geometry and Trigonometry

ED32E - Teaching Mathematics in Grades 10 and 11
This course aims to strengthen participants’ knowledge of the topics in the Optional section and to be able to apply sound pedagogy in order to enable understanding on the part of students.

ME22D - Discrete Mathematics

ME32B - Calculus II

ED30Z - Investigating our Teaching
This course is designed to aid in the understanding of the role of the teacher as a learner, researcher, self-evaluator and reflective practitioner. It provides an opportunity for students to apply their know-ledge of the teaching learning process in implementing an innovative teaching experiment to address a problem in their classrooms, to reflect critically on the experience and to write a report, which informs their future practice.


Year 4

FD13A - Law, Governance, Economy and Society in the Caribbean
This is a multi-disciplinary course of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It will introduce students to some of the major institutions in Caribbean society. This exposure is to both the historical and contemporary aspects of Caribbean society, including Caribbean legal, political and economic systems. In addition, Caribbean culture and Caribbean social problems are discussed.

ED32D - Issues in the Teaching of Mathematics [Part 2]
The course examines issues raised by the students and others introduced by the course tutor, towards establishing a deeper understanding of the issues and appropriate action plans for the future.
