Year 1

FD10 A - English For Academic Purposes
This is a cross-disciplinary course, which is designed to provide a firm base for Communications Courses and for Courses in English for special purposes linked with specific disciplines.

ED20Y - Introduction to Computers in Education
In this course students will be able to acquire knowledge of computer, how the computer affects teaching and learning. It will also enable them to use the computer as a tool for manipulation of text, numbers and graphics; creating presentations; publishing; and information transfer.

UC010 - Fundamentals of Written English
A compulsory remedial course for those persons who failed the English Proficiency Test.

ED25D - Developing Foreign Language Skills
This course is designed to upgrade the teaching skills of graduates of Teachers’ Colleges and to prepare pre-trained teachers to function effectively in the secondary school. These teachers need to be aware of current trends in foreign language pedagogy and to see how this impact on objectives of teaching and learning. Through the activities provided in the course, the students will gain experience in putting these new ideas into practice and will be better able to cope with multi-level groups and gender differences.

S111 - Spanish Language I [Parts 1 and 2]
This course aims to develop students’ skills to the point where they can write about a variety of topics with significant precision; discuss concrete topics relating to particular interests and special fields of competence with reasonable level of pronunciation; understand the main ideas of most speech in standard Spanish and follow essential points of authentic discourse in areas of special interest or knowledge. In addition, students completing this course will have had the opportunity to increase their global awareness and knowledge of contemporary societies where the language is spoken.

ED25C - Pedagogical Developments in Foreign Language Education
Foreign language students will benefit from studying the development of the thrust towards the Communicative Approach in foreign language teaching/learning. Since many of the traditional methods of teaching still survive and are being used in schools, it is important for students to be able to recognize these methods, identify their weaknesses and come to see the value and advantages of a communicative approach to foreign language teaching/learning.

Year 2

FD13A - Law, Governance, Economy and Society in the Caribbean
This is a multi-disciplinary course of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It will introduce students to some of the major institutions in Caribbean society. This exposure is to both the historical and contemporary aspects of Caribbean society, including Caribbean legal, political and economic systems. In addition, Caribbean culture and Caribbean social problems are discussed.

ED20X - Issues and Perspectives in Education
This course seeks to develop the students’ understanding of the interplay of forces that affect teaching and learning and influence educational practice and policy. Students should thereby come to appreciate the critical and dynamic role they play as the educators of the citizens of tomorrow.

S211 - Spanish Language II [Parts 1 and 2]
The aims of this course are to improve the students’ command and comprehension of written and spoken Spanish; skill in writing and speaking Spanish

ED25J - Teaching Spanish in Grade 10 and 11
The development of this course is in recognition of the need for new initiatives to improve teaching at the CXC level. It is designed to provide student teachers with the specific knowledge and skills to successfully teach a CXC programme in the high school and to assist them to acquire mastery of problematic structures as well as the language skills specified by the CXC syllabus. The course will link the language they learn with pedagogical methods.

S14B - Introduction to Spanish American Literature
This course gives students practice in literary analysis through a study of poems and short stories from Spanish America.

Year 3

S14A - Introduction to Spanish Peninsular Literature
This course seeks to introduce students to the literature of Spain and to develop the critical and analytical skills necessary to the study of literature. The literary genres chosen for study are drama and prose fiction.

ED35C - Issues in Foreign Language Education: Caribbean and Local Perspectives
The course is designed mainly to examine local and regional conditions and issues which impact on teaching and learning a foreign language. It provides a forum for teachers to share their knowledge and findings with co-participants in the course, after having investigated an important aspect of foreign language teaching and learning in the Caribbean region.

S311 - Spanish Language III [Parts 1 and 2]
This advanced course enables students to achieve a higher level of competence in reading, listening, writing and speaking for real-life communication. The cultural dimension of language learning is an important aspect of the course. Authentic material is used to explore different aspects of the culture of Spanish-speaking people. The course involves mostly work in Spanish. It covers five main areas, which develop both comprehension and production of Spanish.

ED35M - Integrating Culture into Foreign Language Teaching
The course will provide teachers with the knowledge and skills to guide their students to relate to the culture of the foreign language they are learning and to enjoy it. It is a stepping-stone to further exploration of the multiple ways in which culture may be incorporated into foreign language teaching.

S23B - 20th Century Spanish American Narrative
This course will focus on various aspects of Spanish American narrative since the early 20th century. It is designed to allow students to explore the literary representation of issues such as politics, race, history, gender and culture, which are treated in this narrative. It will examine some of the major developments in the form of the novel and methods of narration.

Year 4

S27D - Women Writers of the Spanish Caribbean
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the work of some contemporary women writers of the Hispanic Caribbean. It seeks to examine some of the issues, which are common to women writers of the region as well as their individual concerns and perspectives and the stylistic devices they employ to transmit their visions. The course will examine the treatment of themes that are gender-related.

ED30Z - Investigating our Teaching
This course is designed to aid in the understanding of the role of the teacher as a learner, researcher, self-evaluator and reflective practitioner. It provides an opportunity for students to apply their know-ledge of the teaching learning process in implementing an innovative teaching experiment to address a problem in their classrooms, to reflect critically on the experience and to write a report, which informs their future practice.

ED35H – Teaching Foreign Language in Context
The course examines the essential role of context and contextual materials in the foreign language acquisition process, and assists participants in planning for teaching in context.
