This programme is opened to all Jamaican teachers at the Traditional high and newly upgraded Secondary Scools, as well as All-Age Schools teaching at the upper levels.

To qualify for this programme, applicants must have Teachers' College Diploma at the Secondary level and satisfy the normal matriculation requirements for entry to the University of the West Indies as well as such Faculty requirements as may be prescribed.

This programme is governed by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Regulations. Course offerings are the collaborative efforts of the Faculties of Pure and Applied Sciences and Humanities and Education. Course offerings as well as the sequencing of courses may change over any academic year.

The duration of study is normally four [4] years. There will be three [3] semesters each year: January, Summer [Face-to-Face Teachers] and September. The maximum time for the completion of the programme will be five [5] years. If students do not complete the programme within this time-frame they will have to make arrangements with UWI to complete it at their own expense.

Summer upgrade is required for some applicants for Mathematics and Biology.

Programme Delivery

The programme uses a variety of distance education materials, tutorials and interactive audio-graphics teleconferences and online deliveries. Approximately seventy percent [70%] of the teaching in this programme will be delivered by Distance Teaching.

Each Distance-Taught course will have a minimum of four teleconferences per semester.

Attendance is compulsory at these sessions.

Web-based Distance Teaching will be used to deliver some courses. This will reduce the utilization of the
Audio-Teleconference Delivery Mode.

Six [6] weeks of each summer will be used to conduct Face-to-Face Taught courses in certain specializations on the Mona Campus.

Cost of the Programme
The Government of Jamaica will cover the cost of tuition, accomodation [for summer courses] and Instructional Material. Students will cover the cost of some books and materials, small fees, meals and transportation. All students must have access to a computer.
