Faculty of Social Sciences Welcomes New Dean

The Faculty of Social Sciences bids farewell to Professor Evan Duggan and welcomes Professor Ian Boxill as the new Dean with effect from August 1, 2016.

 

Professor Ian Boxill is the Carlton Alexander Professor of Management Studies and Director of the Centre for Tourism and Policy Research, at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.  He also holds a personal Chair in Comparative Sociology and is a former Head of the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at The UWI.

 

Professor Boxill holds the BSc degree in Applied Sociology from The UWI, Cave Hill Campus, an MPhil degree in Social Sciences/Development Studies from the Consortium Graduate School of the Social Sciences at The UWI, Mona Campus and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Sociology from Colorado State University, USA.

 

He has authored/edited eight books, over 60 academic articles and has taught at universities in New Zealand, Mexico, the USA, and intermittently at the St Augustine and Cave Hill campuses at the UWI. During the two and a half decades in which he has served at The UWI, he has won numerous awards for outstanding research and raised research grants totalling millions of dollars for the UWI.

 

Outside of his work at The UWI, he has consulted with or worked for various organisations, such as the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), the Department for International Development (DFID), CARICOM, World Wide Fund for Nature, UNESCO, UNCTAD, The World Bank, The CTO, among others.

 

He founded and edits the IDEAZ journal and Carib Xplorer, a science magazine. Professor Boxill served as Associate Editor (Anglophone Caribbean) for the Mexican social sciences and humanities journal, Revista Mexicana del Caribe.  In 2012, he founded the award winning UWI Community Film Project (UWICFP) which trains young inner-city youth from across Jamaica in filmmaking.
