| New Family Centre |
|
| The Social Work Unit, through the hard work of Mrs. Aldene Shillingford, recently received approval and go ahead from the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) for the FAMILY CENTRE to be established at the Voluntary Organisation for the Upliftment of Children (VOUCH). This initiative was started as a sub-project of the other project led and coordinated by Mrs Shillingford, the EFJ/BvLF (Bernard van Leer Foundation) Kingston Inner City Child Support Project (CSP), to manage the trauma experienced by groups in South West St. Andrew in 2003 as a result of the escalating violence there. In collaboration with the CSP, the Family Life Ministries and the UWI Violence Prevention Clinic, a proposal for funding, was subsequently sent to UNICEF, NCB and EFJ for this project to stand on its own, in order to meet the immense demand for such a service. The UWI''s involvement includes the replication of the Violence Prevention Clinic and use treatment models already developed by Dr. Crawford-Brown and a group intervention approach designed by Ms. Maureen Dean (a part-time lecturer at the time), and Ms. Masana DeSouza.
After the National Commercial Bank (NCB) of Jamaica pulled out of the project, UNICEF and the EFJ were anxious to start. The EFJ subsequently re-examined its budget and new decisions and agreements were made for a possible start up date in April or May 2005. The need now (from the UWI Social Work Unit), is to prepare a job description and the qualifications necessary for a part-time Clinical Director for the Centre. It is expected that the Family Centre will be assisted by Social Work and, possibly, Psychology students in the masters programmes, who may be assigned at the Centre as a part of their practicum requirement.
