The School of Education
administers the graduate programmes leading to the
M.Ed (by thesis and project), M.Phil. and Ph.D degrees.
Staff from the Department of Educational Studies and
the Institute of Education, as well as other educators
from the wider academic and professional community
participate in delivery of these programmes.
Currently the Masters in
education is offered using two modalities: The Masters in
Education through face-to-face classes; and the Masters
in Education through on-line
sessions.
The latter is to facilitate
persons desirous of doing the programme, but who cannot
attend afternoon classes at the Mona Campus.
The Masters' courses delivered through face-to-face

The Masters' programme is sttructured as follows:
M.Ed. (by
project): Candidates are required to complete eight taught courses and a research paper. The course Research methods (ED60N) is compulsory for t his Programme

Candidates for admission
must qualify under the general university regulations for
a Masters' Degree.
A first degree at or above the Lower
Second Honours Levels; or a grade point average equivalent
to a B or above; and
Professional qualification in teach-
ing such as a postgraduate diploma or certificate, or an
applicant's icant's
academic record and referees' reports must be submitted
to Graduate Studies and Research, Mona.
Equivalents.
Applicants
with a U.W.I. B. Ed. degree gained before the honours classificaions
were introduced (between 1970 1985), must have a minimum
of B grade average. Applicants who graduated before 1970
must have a minimum of B in their research study.
June 7, 2007 with a Pass Degree will be considered only in exceptional
cases where the candidate's professional experience and
performance suggest further intellectual development. Such
special applications are subject to the approval of the
Board for Graduate Studies. There is $250.00 (Jamaican)
application fee. The application forms can be obtained from
U.W.I. centres in the region or at U.W.I. campuses.
*This specialization is not currently being offered

M.Phil Programme
This is a research degree and may be terminal but it is also the normal route to the PHD. programme. The criteria for transfer are specified in the UWI higher Degrees Manual
The minimum requirement for admission to MPhil programmes shall be an Upper Second Class Honours Degree or its equivalent.
PhD Programmes
The PhD Degree is awarded solely on the basis osf a thesis that should be a record of independent research into an original problem showing an original approach to the porblem or an original approach to a problem previously studied. An oral examination of the dissertation is required.
Candidates are required to register every year until the thesis is completed. Candidates assume all the responsiblities of seeing that all the requirements are met. A thesis or project may be rejected if University regulations in the thesis guide are not kept. When the candidate and the supervisor(s) are satisfied that the thesis/project is nearing complestion, at least three months before the final competition, application should be made for examination.
The Master of Arts in Teaching
Thi s part-time programme is designed for teachers and/or lecturers who hold at least a first degree and are now desirous of professional/formal training in a Masters of Teaching. The programme conmmences in Summer 2007 and will be offered, in the first instance, only in Jamaica to face to face students
