The School of Education
administers the graduate programmes leading to the
M.Ed (by thesis and project), M.Phil. and Ph.D degrees.
Staff from the Department of Educational Studies and
the Institute of Education, as well as other educators
from the wider academic and professional community
participate in delivery of these programmes.
Currently the Masters in
education is offered using two modalities: The Masters in
Education through face-to-face classes; and the Masters
in Education through on-line
sessions.
The latter is to facilitate
persons desirous of doing the programme, but who cannot
attend afternoon classes at the Mona Campus.
The Masters' courses delivered through face-to-face
classes are offered in the afternoons between the

a combination of summer and on-line courses.
The Masters' programme is sttructured as follows:
M.Ed. (by
thesis): The Course requirement in this program is a minimum
of Six courses and a thesis. The course Research Methods
(ED60N) is compulsory for this programe.
M.Ed. (by
project): The Course requirement in this program is eight
courses and a research paper. The course Research Methods
(ED60N) is compulsory for this Programe.

This is a research degree
and may be terminal, but it is also the normal route to
the Ph.D. programme. The criteria for transfer
are specified in the UWI Higher Degrees Manual.
Candidates for admission
must qualify under the general university regulations for
a Masters' Degree. A first degree at or above the Lower
Second Honours Levels; or a grade point average equivalent
to a B or above; and .A professional qualification in teach-
ing such as a postgraduate diploma or certificate, or an

academic record and referees' reports must be submitted
to Graduate Studies and Research, Mona. Equivalents. Applicants
with a U.W.I. B. Ed. degree gained before the honours classificaions
were introduced (between 1970 1985), must have a minimum
of B grade average. Applicants who graduated before 1970
must have a minimum of B in their research study. Applicants
with a Pass Degree will be considered only in exceptional
cases where the candidate's professional experience and
performance suggest further intellectual development. Such
special applications are subject to the approval of the
Board for Graduate Studies. There is $250.00 (Jamaican)
application fee. The application forms can be obtained from
U.W.I. centres in the region or at U.W.I. campuses.
