  • UWI Pelican A "draws a win" in JNA Open League

    The University of the West Indies, Mona Pelicans Senior Netball Team in a spirited display of prowess managed to defeat the defending champions, Jamalco 24-20 in the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)/Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Open League Competition held at the Leila Robinson Courts at the National Stadium on Saturday.

    In another encounter later that evening UWI A was only able to secure a 21-21 draw against Waulgrovian.

    Meanwhile the UWI B team who remain undefeated will face New Kingston Raiders in a reschedule match set for tomorrow at the National Stadium Courts starting at 6:20pm.

  • UWI Pelican achieves new Personal Best in Discus

    UWI Scholarship athlete and Discus Thrower Oshane Harris achieved a new personal best of 50.06 meters last weekend at the Jamaica College Track Meet held at the National Stadium his second outing for this season.

    Harris, whose previous best was 48.09 meters aspires to reach the mid 60s mark and is currently training to achieve that personal goal. "Right now, my coach and I are doing some background work as I want to go the distance."

    Harris, also achieved a new personal best of 14.93meters over the weekend at the Morant Bay Track Meet but this time in the Shot put, although he doesn't deem himself a 'shot putter', Harris used the opportunity to develop on skills that would help him to excel in Discus. Harris is down to participate in the Queens/Grace Jackson Track and Field Meet set for this weekend at the National Stadium. Although it is very early in the season Harris is using opportunities like these to put in the necessary ground work to propel him to achieve his goal of competing at the World University Games and to qualify for the World Championships to represent Jamaica.



  • UWI Pelican 'smashes' to victory in Intercollegiate Badminton Championship

    The Mona Pelicans from Kingston Jamaica proved too hot for the ladies of Northern Caribbean University (NCU) out of cool, cool Manchester when they faced off in the finals of the Intercollegiate Badminton Championships 2012 on November 29, 2012. The action on mid court got on the way to a smashing start and proved to be a display of Badminton prowess; one might add that it was a match worthy of a final although the score line tells a different story. 

    The UWI Mona Pelicans who had journeyed from Kingston to NCU had no intention to return home empty handed, and that they did not, the Pelicans flicked, smashed, rallied to a 3-1 victory over NCU in an ardent display of prowess, Pelican Ruth Williams was declared Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match.

    The 2012 Intercollegiate Team comprised of Mikaylia Haldane, Ashauna Davis, Kerrian Foster, Juett Carty, Ruth Williams, Allison Henry and Shanice Henry.




  • UWI Kick starts Jackie Bell Knockout on a winning note

    The UWI Pelicans Football Club kicked start its quest for the Jackie Bell knockout title on a winning note when they defeated Real Mona 2-0 on Monday. Scholarship athlete and mid fielder Rochane Smith was the first to find the net sending the Mona Pelicans to the Butter Cup Park's dressing room with a 1-0 advantage at the stroke of half time.

    The Pelicans who were ousted in the quarter finals of the preliminary round last year had no intention of repeating such a mishap. With this in mind, National Under 23 representative and UWI scholarship athlete Andrae Bernal secured victory for the Mona Pelicans when he found the back of the net before the final whistle.

    UWI Mona will next face Real Mona on Monday, December 3, 2012 the return leg of the Knockout set to kick off at 3:30pm at the UWI Mona Bowl.
