  • UWI Pelican 'smashes' to victory in Intercollegiate Badminton Championship

    The Mona Pelicans from Kingston Jamaica proved too hot for the ladies of Northern Caribbean University (NCU) out of cool, cool Manchester when they faced off in the finals of the Intercollegiate Badminton Championships 2012 on November 29, 2012. The action on mid court got on the way to a smashing start and proved to be a display of Badminton prowess; one might add that it was a match worthy of a final although the score line tells a different story. 

    The UWI Mona Pelicans who had journeyed from Kingston to NCU had no intention to return home empty handed, and that they did not, the Pelicans flicked, smashed, rallied to a 3-1 victory over NCU in an ardent display of prowess, Pelican Ruth Williams was declared Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match.

    The 2012 Intercollegiate Team comprised of Mikaylia Haldane, Ashauna Davis, Kerrian Foster, Juett Carty, Ruth Williams, Allison Henry and Shanice Henry.




  • UWI Kick starts Jackie Bell Knockout on a winning note

    The UWI Pelicans Football Club kicked start its quest for the Jackie Bell knockout title on a winning note when they defeated Real Mona 2-0 on Monday. Scholarship athlete and mid fielder Rochane Smith was the first to find the net sending the Mona Pelicans to the Butter Cup Park's dressing room with a 1-0 advantage at the stroke of half time.

    The Pelicans who were ousted in the quarter finals of the preliminary round last year had no intention of repeating such a mishap. With this in mind, National Under 23 representative and UWI scholarship athlete Andrae Bernal secured victory for the Mona Pelicans when he found the back of the net before the final whistle.

    UWI Mona will next face Real Mona on Monday, December 3, 2012 the return leg of the Knockout set to kick off at 3:30pm at the UWI Mona Bowl. 














  • UWI Pelican Girls "double marked" for Intercollegiate Netball Finals

    Under the tutelage of Coach Conrad Parks, the University of the West Indies, Mona Intermediate and Senior Netball teams have secured their spot in the Intercollegiate Netball Finals.

    The Intermediate Team are hungry for victory after over a 10 year drought since they last won the title. The UWI B team placed one hand on the trophy when they defeated Mico B- 35-30 over the weekend. The eager and enthusiastic UWI B will be seeking to get both hands on the trophy when they take on GC Foster on Thursday in the finals.

    Being in the finals is nothing new to the UWI Senior team, champions in 2010,UWI A were dethroned by Mico A in 2011 and will be seeking to avenge defeat.  A clash of the Champions, defending champions Mico A will be seeking to retain the title but not without a fight from former champions UWI A who have been looking dangerous throughout the season, they sent a final warning to Mico A on Thursday when they thrashed UTECH 41-27 to march into the finals of the competition set to take center court on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the UWI Mona Bowl.





  • UWI/CB 5K Walk/Run

    The University of the West Indies have partnered with the Caribbean Broilers Group to stage the inaugural UWI/5K Walk/Run. The event is set to be staged on November 18, 2012.

    The race was developed out of a need for additional tertiary education funding for students who possess a gift in athletics and a academically gifted as well but whose dreams are sometimes shattered because of the inability to meet their financial obligations.

    All proceeds from the race will go directly toward the development of sports and education of the most talented and in-need students here at UWI Mona. The scholarships will benefit students who are entering University, as well as those who encounter unforeseen financial emergencies while enrolled. Currently there are over 70 student athletes enrolled in our program, this annual 5K will provide a steady flow of funding for these scholarships. 

    The UWI Mona Sports Department in acknowledging the importance of sports, particularly track and field to Jamaica, its power in unifying our nation, the hope it provides to our people, the joy it brings to our friends and families, and the glory it brings to our country's nation. The UWI Mona is on a drive to enhance its approach to athletics development. The UWI Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence is home to the world's best, Jamaica's glory- a highly motivated group of young persons who want to make a difference as the future of Jamaica's sporting powerhouses.
