Electrical Power Engineering

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Power Engineering is designed to serve students who are desirous of pursuing a career path in electrical power generation, transmission and distribution.  It offers in-depth study of the generation of electricity from fossil fuel (oil, coal and gas), renewable sources (sun, wind, biomass, etc.) and nuclear energy. This 3-year programme is structured so that during the first year students are exposed to introductory courses in engineering physics and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, programming, engineering mathematics, electronics, electrical circuits and electrical power systems. The second year courses introduce students to the core concepts of electricity generation. These concepts are further explored in laboratory and project courses, with an advanced engineering mathematics course providing the necessary mathematical rigour. The final year has a combination of core courses project and electives. The core consists of courses in electrical power systems and power distribution, engineering management and entrepreneurship, electromagnetism and a year-long capstone project.

During every semester of this 3-year programme, a teaching laboratory and project design course must be taken by each student. The practical application and testing of the concepts presented in the theoretical classes for that semester will be explored in these lab and project sessions. Engineering students learn through a combination of design and lab work. This mix of theory and practical application allows students to think things through and then apply their ideas in a variety of real life situations. Students also learn to diagnose problems and develop a variety of solutions.

 

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

The overall educational objectives for the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Power Engineering are to produce graduate who can:

  1. Embark upon diverse career paths in electrical power engineering while demonstrating professional engineering competence by holding positions of increasing responsibility in industry, business, government and/or educational institution.
  2. Advance their technical skills, knowledge and understanding through professional growth and development opportunities provided by participation in a professional society, continuing education, or pursuit of advanced degrees in engineering or other related fields.
  3. Publish papers, reports, patents and/or technical presentations at local, national, international meetings or within the professional organization/company that they are affiliated with.

Students successfully completing the BSc Electrical Power Engineering programme should have the ability to:

  • apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering principles to solve problems in electrical power engineering;
