Mr. Andre Gordon has been instrumental in initiatives related to research and services offered through the Radioecology Laboratory in the Department of Physics. He has made critical contributions to the Radioecology Laboratory being approved as a Centre of Excellence within the National Health Laboratories Network from October 2018. This network is a part of the Environmental Health Unit (EHU) in the Ministry of Health. The Radioecology Laboratory provides elemental analysis via XRF and radioisotopes via Gamma Spectroscopy. He has also led in the offer of services on particle sizing for an external company. Mr. Gordon has contributed to analyses of samples under different thematic areas of Medical Physics in relation to MSc, MPhil and PhD projects and externally funded projects.
Mr. Gordon has also participated in a joint project with ICENS and Pure Earth in April 2018. The team investigated five sites for the Toxic Sites Identification Program (TSIP). Investigations were focused on areas with lead, mercury and arsenic contamination. Heavy metal concentrations in Dutch pots produced locally were also investigated. Mr. Gordon has participated in a Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) sponsored project to investigate potential mercury exposure in Jamaica in respect to the Minamata Convention. The study resulted in the publication of a journal article. He also played an integral role in the further development of the Department’s Real time Monitoring System (RealTMS) for Water Quality with systems being implemented for deployment later this year. Mr. Gordon also contributes to the teaching of electronics and medical physics courses in the department.
Mr. Gordon is always willing to support departmental activities. Aside from his exceptional consistent performance in laboratory assignments, he is a diligent team player who exhibits gentle mannerism. He was awarded ‘For Excellence in the Provision of Technical Duties (MONATS)’ at the Faculty’s Awards Ceremony held on March 31, 2022.
