Dr. Christopher Cahill, Professor of Chemistry and International Affairs at George Washington University, along with his PhD student Elizabeth Decoteau, visited the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies, Mona, from April 15–19, 2026. They were hosted by Dr Marvadeen Singh-Wilmot (Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemistry). Dr. Cahill is a longstanding collaborator of Marvadeen Singh-Wilmot with whom he has co-authored several journal articles.

During their time on campus, they met with Dr. Donna Minott Kates, Head of the Department of Chemistry, and Professor Michael Taylor, Dean of the Faculty. The visit focused on exploring opportunities to deepen collaboration in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), X-ray crystallography research, and student engagement initiatives.

As part of his visit, Dr. Cahill delivered a seminar titled “Interesting science from the part of the periodic table no one ever talks about: the f block!”, which generated strong interest among staff and students. He also engaged in collaborative research with the MSW Research Group at CrXstal within the Department of Chemistry.

Dr Cahill and Ms Decoteau further connected with final-year chemistry students who are considering postgraduate studies, offering guidance and insights into research opportunities. Beyond their academic engagements, Dr Cahill and Elizabeth experienced Jamaica’s natural beauty during a visit to rural St. Thomas.
