Resident Tallawah

Prestonite Rovman Powell is an outstanding young cricketer who was drafted for the Jamaica Tallawahs and went on to lift the Caribbean Premier League T20 trophy.

Powell grew up in the Bannister district of Old Harbour in St. Catherine, Jamaica, and from the age of 15, was being groomed for a career as a professional cricketer by coaches who spotted his talents on the field.  He was captain of Old Harbour High’s cricket team from which he moved on to play professionally for St. Catherine Combined Campuses until the University of the West Indies, Mona, offered him a scholarship to pursue tertiary education and his cricketing dream.

When at 22 Rovman was drafted for the Tallawahs, he saw it as an opportunity to break himself and his family out of poverty.  “When I told my mother that she can stop sending me money, and I sent her the first lump sum of cash, it made me the happiest man alive...I was finally able to care for her," said Powell. The Education major who is concentrating on Geography and Social Studies, said that his life has not been easy as he often went to bed without eating.

However, Rovman is now determined to push on to greater success: “My ultimate dream is to play for the West Indies in all formats and also to play for recognized clubs in leagues like the Big Bash and Indian Premier League."
