Exhibition in Honour of Rupert Lewis: Teacher, Activist  and Scholar

A conference in honour of Professor Rupert Lewis entitled "Black Radical Thought, Pedagogy and Praxis was held October 11 to 12 2013 on the Mona Campus.


Rupert Lewis has spent a lifetime dedicated to teaching and activism meant to affirm people of African descent in the Caribbean and globally. His work on Marcus Garvey and Walter Rodney has been critical to the search for knowledge and understanding in the realities of African Diaspora peoples.

 

 
  

 

Exhibition to honour the New Principal of the Mona Campus, Professor McDonald

Professor McDonald served as Deputy Principal of Mona, and is the former Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona.   He is a graduate of the UWI and received his postgraduate DM degree in 1987.  He has had an outstanding career as a surgeon in Trauma and Emergency Medicine.  He is credited with starting the first Accident and Emergency Department in Jamaica at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).  With colleagues, he established the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Programme in Jamaica and conducted seminal studies that defined the epidemiology of injury in Jamaica which led to development of Jamaica’s Injury Surveillance System.  He has published some 125 papers and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals.

 
  

Celebrating 50 YEARS: Jamaica and University of the West Indies, Mona

In 2012 Jamaica celebrated 50 years of independence and the University of the West Indies marked 50 years since the attainment of University status. Exhibition for 100th anniversary of the birth of Jamaican author, V. S. Reid

The University of the West Indies Mona Library marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jamaican author Victor Stafford Reid with an exhibition on his life and works.

In addition to being a writer Reid held several posts in the Jamaican government, including Chairman of the Jamaica National Trust Commission, and a Trustee of the Historic Foundation Research Centre in Kingston. He won a number of awards including, Silver Musgrave Medal in the field of Literature , the Non-resident Canada Fellowship, the Gold Musgrave Medal in the field of Literature , the Order of Jamaica as well as the Norman Manley Foundation Award for Excellence for his contribution to Literature in Jamaica.

The Library also houses the Vic Reid Collection. In addition it contains research materials from 1947-1987 especially those relating to Norman Manley’ biography Horses of the Morning.

 
  
 

Professor Stuart Hall 1932 - 2014

A distinguished and well-respected thinker, theorist, sociologist, and political activist, Hall was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1932. He attended Jamaica College and in 1950 was the recipient of both the Jamaica and Rhodes scholarships. The exhibition highlights his high school accomplishments, his cultural and political activism in Britain, his scholarship, his impressive public service record, as well as his numerous honours and awards.

The exhibition was originally mounted  for the Centre  for Caribbean Thought's Third  Annual Conference  in 2004  entitled "Culture, Politics, Race and Diaspora: the Thought of Stuart Hall”,

It was remounted in his memory. (Feb 2014)

2014 Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence


An exhibition to honour the recipients of the 2014 Vice Chancellor's Awards for Excellence  is now on display in the Catalogue Hall of the Main Library.

Recepients of this award: Professor Marvin Reid, Director of the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit, Professor Simon Mitchell, Department of Geography and Geology, and Professor Hopeton Dunn, Director of the Caribbean Institute of Media & Communications (CARIMAC), whose award is for contributions to public service.
 

The awards were presented at a ceremony on Monday, October 27th at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.

Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

The Science Branch library has created an exhibition on “Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)”. The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the work of women scientists (professors and doctors) in the Faculty of Science & Technology at the University of the West Indies, Mona. It also seeks to call attention to the burgeoning STEM concept in Jamaica.
