Dr. Boyd earned his M.Phil. for his work on incorporating Cyanobacteria as biofertilizers for local rice cultivation, which focused on the successful reduction of artificial fertilizer usage. In July 2018 he was awarded the PhD in Botany for his research on the Cryptic Dioecy and Reproductive Ecology of Jamaican Allspice (Pimenta dioica L. Merr.).

As a trained educator he spent 19 years in the secondary school system and joined the department in 1998. He is an External Examiner for the Joint Board of Teacher Education and his academic interests centre on plant biology, autotrophic eukaryotic microorganisms and their anthropogenic applications.
