Critical Literacy Practices Workshop
The School of Education at The UWI, Mona in collaboration with Operation Save Jamaica will host a professional development workshop examining Critical Literacy Practices in Urban Schools. The Workshop takes place on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the School Lecture Theatre 2, The UWI, Mona. Professor Annette Henry from the University of British Columbia will be the presenter on this occasion.
The workshop covers a range of topics including: strategies to overcome the challenges of teaching urban youth; the use of standard language and Creole in the classroom; good instructional practices; creating classrooms in which students want to learn; creating a curriculum relevant to the lives of students.
18th Annual Conference of the Jamaica Association of Clinical Pathologists
Neurological Diseases is the topic for discussion at the 18th annual Conference of the Association of Clinical Pathologists. The Conference is being organized with the Department of Pathology, The UWI, Mona and is slated to take place on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 8:30 am at the Knutsford Court Hotel. Professor Eldermire-Shearer, Head, Community Health and Psychiatry at The UWI, Mona will deliver the Stanley Brook Memorial Lecture on this occasion.
Members of the medical fraternity are especially invited to attend. The registration fee for Medical Doctors is $2000, other members of the medical fraternity pay $1500 and medical students, free of cost.

Faculty of Medical Sciences Research Conference & Workshop 2012
The Faculty of Medical Sciences 21st Annual Research Conference and Workshop is being held under the theme: “The NCDs (Noncommunicable Diseases)-A Threat to Life and the Economy”. The Conference will officially start with an Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 5:30 pm where the Distingushed Sir Kenneth Standard Lecture will be delivered by UWI Chancellor and Director Emeritus, PAHO, Sir George Alleyne. The Conference continues over two days with poster and oral presentations on November 8 and a workshop on November 9 at the Faculty of Medical Sciences Teaching and Research Complex in the Faculty.
The Conference is preceded by an Ethics Workshop on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 8 am at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, UHWI.
History at Fifty Conference
The Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona will honour Professor Emeritus Barry Higman during the Conference, History at Fifty slated for November 8-10, 2012. Professor Barry Higman will be honoured for his valuable contribution to institutional and curriculum development in the Department and the UWI, and to the wider Jamaican and Caribbean History. He will receive special recognition during the Opening Ceremony on Thursday November 8, 2012 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.
