The Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) and the Caribbean Institute for Media and Communications will host the co-launch the Mona ICT Policy Centre and the book, “Ringtones of Opportunities: Policy, Technology and Access in Caribbean Communications”. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 6 pm at the Undercroft.

The Mona Information Communication Technologies (ICT) Centre which will be housed at the Mona School of Business and Management has grown out of the Telecommunications Policy Management Programme (TPM) and is designed to provide consultation, research, training and education, and outreach to primarily the telecommunication and information communication industries.

The book “Ringtones of Opportunities: Policy, Technology and Access in Caribbean Communications” is edited by Professor Hopeton Dunn, Director, CARIMAC, UWI, Mona. This volume is one of the first books to present scholarly research on the liberating opportunities offered by information and communications technologies in the Caribbean and the global south. While acknowledging challenges of policy implementation and technology adaptation, the book nevertheless identifies a range of empowering development options in media literacy, e-fisheries, m-banking, mobile telephony,               m-agriculture, tele-working, techno-driven environmental strategies and intellectual property reforms.  The Book is a compilation of academic literature from TPM’s major research studies from 2006 - 2012 as well as contributions of related research from the Caribbean and the wider developing world.
